I was expecting tragedy...

While watching this film, I was waiting for something horrible to happen. When the little boy jumps into the pool my heart skipped a beat. I'm a lifeguard, and my first instinct was that he was drowning. But then later when he comes home soping wet, I laughed.

I really really liked this film.

Haha! I was worried as well at that part, but then I realized nothing would happen becuase earlier the boy was practicing holding his breath in the sink. Good movie.

Just because he practiced holding his breath, doesn't mean he could swim. That was an unfair game the director played with the audience IMO.

Ha ha i thought so too, but yeah thats a good scene.

Well, that apparent tragic event turned out to be nothing but a scare (for the audience), as the boy is just having fun. Maybe, going along with the dark themes of the movie, he's acting out the sense of death and despair.

The tragedy is that the characters are trapped in their lives, their relationships and work situations. Most characters seem unable to change their views and behavior patterns. Only Ting-Ting and Yang-Yang show an ability to both reflect and learn. But will they grow up to be like all the adults???

Well there is tragedy involving some side characters and one or two of the main characters, for example Fatty, the young teenager who fell for Ting Tang and her Neighbor friend, who's pretty shown to be promiscuous throughout the film. End's up killing the teacher having a relationship with promiscuous Neighbor's mother, and if it's going by news reports on the TV slept with Ting Tang's friend. The sad thing the so called friend only got back with Fatty to get one over on her ex friend Ting Tang.

Also the grandmother going into Coma and then dying was pretty tragic.

Also the father NJ and his long lost childhood love Sherry, both love each other but they just can't get together. I thought the actress playing Sherry was fantastic, she really sold that Sherry clearly was effected by NJ leaving her 30 years before. That was pretty tragic, as Sherry even though she's had a successful life in terms of her work, but is a mess in her private life.

none of the main characters die, but they still had tragedy in their lives.

I've got a conjecture. When you look at the boy afterwards, he seemed very happy. So it could be that the girl he liked saved him when she came to swim.
