Rape and murder don't make movies brilliant

Just because horrible things happen in real life doesn't mean that capturing them on film does anyone a service or makes any artistic statement.

It's stupid, it's pointless, and it certainly isn't brilliant. Dark, evil and unfortunate maybe, but I laugh at the pretentiousness of people who call movies like this "brilliant."

I agree. Unless the movie is based on true events. To me, these acts tend to come off as if they are being glamorized. I almost watched A Clock Work Orange until I heard about the rape scene. There is a French film called Irreversible that has two of the most disturbing scenes that I have seen. One scene is where a guy has his face being bashed with a fire extinguisher until his flesh starts falling off and people are standing around cheering it on and a rape scene that lasts too long.
