There are a few things in this post that I found interesting, that is why I am posting here even this discussion had been going on for nearly a decade.
First of all, I thought people got confused between 'free' and 'moral'. You can be free to a certain degree no matter what kind of government is running the country. You think an Chinese Emperor would be able to kill everyone who calls his name? Chinese Emperors were considered God's son and offending him even slightly is death penalty but it is impossible for him to punish everyone because he just does not know everyone who may or may not offend privately; he is not almighty after all.
People from communist countries or any countries who are not from democratic countries like to call democratic countries out of control and mocking freedom. The truth, no one is truly free. Democracy only gives people freedom to express themselves and the true democratic government actually provides control to limit the freedom so the country don't go chaotic. Obviously, no system is perfect, anyone can pursue power and with power, they can manipulate system. However, I still believe in democracy and freedom of people. Dictatorship may seem to have control for a period of time but only when the dictator actually know what to do for his people. Otherwise, he will get overthrown eventually and always end up with war. Every single dictator who could lead the country is because of war. Democracy is the way to avoid that.
There are two kind of law in my point of view: one is for controlling the politics and another is controlling the moral of the society. When talking about moral, it becomes complex because it is not really threatening the country but it may have negative impact on society. The impact is simply about how 'comfortable' people feel about certain things. Law cannot limit people on everything, it is the education from the religion, family, school and every other types of media that tells us what we should do to make our lives more 'comfortable'. Comfort does not seem that serious but it is important because there are so many stresses in people's lives, it is always the comfort we are seeking. To me, that is moral. I am not particular sure about every country but at least in Chinese history, moral exists for long time. People need to decide what is the moral thing to do; they need to decide certain things makes them feel more comfortable and call it a 'right' thing to do.
Now back to the movie. Here is a story talk about a 16 years curious about love and sex and siblings rivalries and there are sexual scenes. There may or may not be a law against it but does the government really should do anything about it? I personally say 'no', this should be leaving to people to decide if it is a moral thing to watch that kind of movie. I see no one is trashing the studio because the movie is so wrong so this is probably acceptable from a moral perspective. However, if someone blames a movie production like this on policy, law or freedom, I cannot agree with him. To control this should be by education, society and media in general.
