This is probably my favorite low-brow comedy of all time.
The scenes added in for the movie (ex. The cow scene, one-boobed woman, intro, etc.) were the only things I didn't particularly care for, yet most of the people claiming they hated this movie are saying "Yeah, that fight scene with the cow was the only part that made me laugh." To be honest, I was pretty tempted to turn it off during the first five minutes or so, but I'm glad I stuck around. As several people have already stated, most audiences went into this expecting something completely different. They wanted a ridiculous, over-the-top movie filled with CGI cows, gopher nunchucks, aliens, fighting babies, and one-boobed women. Instead, they got what was basically a riff of an old kung-fu flick, which would bore a lot of people with its lack of CGI cows.
I'm a big fan of foreign martial arts movies from the 60s-80s, mainly for the cheesiness and bizarre plots. I love riffing on them with my family/friends (I'm also a huge fan of MST3k), so the parts with the voiceovers where they were poking fun at the original movie were hilarious to me.
It's not everyone's cup of tea, and the way this was marketed was a shame. It's gained a pretty big cult following over the years, and I know a lot of people who love it (mainly the ones who enjoy the martial arts genre). It's not universally despised. Still, I understand the hate.
