Why do people HATE this movie?

I'm not talking dislike or thought is sucked. It seems that this movie more than most is a polarizing. I've known several people react almost violently to the thought of watching it. When it was in theaters I had two friends walk out before the opening credits. Just last night we were watching it at work on our lunch break, three of us laughing and one guy very agitated swearing repeatadly.
What gives, think its stupid all you want, I see that but is it that bad.

Some folks simply have no sense of humor.

Its the more random parts that are just so absurd and hilarious. I think people were expecting traditional set up and punchline with maybe a zinger style of slapstick.... or maybe they were expecting something else. This movie really pokes fun at problems all older dubbed Hong Kong action films suffered from, with its added absurdities. A lot of people get offended if comedy is not intelligent, which is kind of a crappy attitude to take when what you pursue is laughter. I think it takes some kind of intelligence critical thinking to understand why a lot of this movie is funny. These are one of those purposefully dumb movies that cant beat general cynicism enforced by pride (because someone once saw Ideocracy and took the purposed critical view from that film as personal doctrine).

Personally I found Kung Pow by accident and thought it was one of the funniest slapsticks I have ever seen. I'm not surprised a lot of people didn't get it.

I and my daughter think it's pretty funny, but my wife hates it. Just different strokes for different folks. Simple as that.

I thought it was as unfunny as anything I've seen that is supposed to be a comedy. Never came close to getting off the ground. Maybe the cow was good for one small chuckle.

Trailer didnt attract me at all. Actually, if it was from the trailer only I would have never watched it. I was rewarded as this is one of my fave movies of all times.

I see it this way (and I overall like "Kung Pow").

I think for someone to appreciate a lot of the humor in "Kung Pow" they need to understand and like Asian martial arts films, especially those by Brue Lee.
But the viewer also needs to not mind that "Kung Pow" seriously makes fun of Asian martial arts movies.

That's a pretty small audience imo.

I've known people who haven't liked "Kung Pow" because they don't know much about martial arts films and so they can't get the humor.
I've also seen people who love martial arts movies and they hate seeing a film like "Kung Pow" that makes fun of what they love.

BB ;-)

it's just in my opinion - imo -

I have never watched a martial arts movie before nor after watching Kung Pow. Yet Kung Pow reamins one of my favorite movies ever. All my friends or the people I get a long with also enjoy it.

They wanted to target a wider audience with the cow thing and the movie would have had a better rating here if it had not been doing so as a lot less narrow minded people would have seen the movie and rated it.

The ventriloquists part is one of my favorite scenes. Of course there are too many great scenes to tell them all. This movie is epic.

I haven't read the whole thread, so this might have been addressed: You had friends who walked out before the opening credits? Like, they bought a ticket, sat down, saw some trailers and the "shut off your cell phone" PSA, and left? Do I understand you correctly? I am confuse, son.

I can't get my head around either finding this movie hilarious or offensively awful. It's simply a half-arsed, low-budget spoof were every gag could very well be accompanied by a rim-shot. It didn't aim high enough to make any reasonable person angry to the point they'd be "agitated and swearing repeatedly." It's like someone complaining about a Justin Beiber song or something. You may not like it, but it's innocuous enough to just let it go.

If someone finds this funny, have at it, but I'll pass. If someone finds it aggressively awful to the point of throwing a hissy fit? Good grief. Someone needs to get over themselves. I would've had fun tweaking your work buddy.
