I watched the first 10 minutes dubbed and couldn't stand it. Had to switch over to french with subtitles.

The only main problem I had with the dubbing was the awful voice they gave Le Bihan's character- kind of wrecked every scene he was in which is a large majority of the film

The Fronsac voice is awful. Remix it and millions more will join the cause.
The voice has too much maturity and color for Fronsac's personality.

I've never watched it dubbed, because I'm kind of scared. I love this movie so much, I just think watching it dubbed would take something away from it. I also like to turn off the subtitles, because I know what they're talking about in most of the scenes. I think it depends on the mood i'm in.

I just finished watching it dubbed and I was thouroughly impressed with the timing. I switched over to French twice to make sure that some scenes weren't actually shot in English! That's how good the dubbing was.

I agree. The timing of the dubbing was good, thank goodness. I watched in English because I wouldn't have had the patience to watch this movie in French. I wouldn't have wanted to read subtitles.

I actually found the dubbing to be quite excellent. I may be wrong, but aren't the actors supplying their own voices in English?

Only Vincent Cassel (Jean-François). The rest rely on other people.

Monica Bellucci dubbed her own lines in English. Her voice is pretty distinctive.

Ahh, Vincent Cassel. This man is pure brilliance. By far one of my favorite actors. Not my #1, but he's high up on the list.

I thought the dubbing was generally very good. Timing was spot on, voices matched characters, lines were delivered in a natural manner. So yeah, I had no problems. Then again, I have watched a hell of a lot of old Shaw Brothers flicks...

I am German, and clearly I watched it dubbed in German - and was very pleased. All the voices fit to the characters well. Jean-Francois for example is spoken by the same person that did the dubbing for Grima Wormtongue in LOTR.

The german dubbing of films is very good in general. I can't remember of any film I was ever upset about it. Maybe one of the reasons is the fact, that every international actor/actress always has the SAME german voice (I don't know how that is handled in other countries).

I watched this movie several times in French and LOVED it. So much so that I made my parents sit down and watch it. They asked to see the dubbed version (Mom couldn't find her reading glasses). Less than ten minutes into it I was squirming in my skin and my parents were pained... They half-heartily agreed to switch to subtitles; the only reason they didn't turn it off entirely was because I swore up and down that it was a great movie. Once the French began it was a completely different movie!
(p.s. They loved it once we made that switch)

Moral of the story - see movies the way they're meant to be seen!

Well I almost agree with everything mentioned quit impressively I would say.

I hate watching dubbed things... animation is okay at times. But otherwise subtitles is my choice. But I had to watch this as dubbed. And was fairly surprised... I think the lip sync was iincredible well done. My only other comparision is german dubbing (and they have a tendency to suck).

But the voice choices was maybe not the best both Marianne and Fronsac's voices was terrible... Fronsac sounded like his voice had been recorded through a speaker. Marianne sounded to have a far older voice than the character. Luckily she didnt say much.

And clearly Cassel and Belluci did their own voices. Cassel often in the end seemed to get more french accent, which I found quit amusing.

And if that Fronsac voice really is mr. Owen... well thats just a poor choice. I dont like his voice much to be honest. It annoys me. And for some reason they give him too many voice over jobs... argh!!

Oh and the sounds of the beast I am fairly sure was the same guy too! Mr. Frank Welker... voice legend!!

And dubbing isnt right... imagine seeing Passion of the Christ or Apocalypto or Rapa Nui in english... Hollywood could learn alot from that way of working and giving a movie a proper treatment.

Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.

I agree with your assessment of the dubbing in BOTW.

A lot of the people in this thread seem very quick to dismiss the dubbed version, and they sound like total snobs or just know-it-all morons that haven't actually watched the dubbed version. I don't mind subtitles, but I saw this movie from a Chinese site, and since I don't speak French and can't read Mandarin, I had to luck into finding an English dub with Chinese subtitles.

I think the English dub was very well-done. There were some very good English voice actors here. The voices were synched almost flawlessly to the actors, and most of the English voices fit the characters quite well.

I will agree that Marianne and Fronsac's voices were the most off-putting of the dubbed cast. Marianne's voice was much harsher and more nasal than someone her age should sound, and although it didn't bother me too much after a while, it was still odd to hear such a strange voice coming from a teenage girl. Fronsac's voice was definitely an 'interesting' choice, but I liked it and thought it fit his character well enough.

People may not like dubbed movies, but at least this one did a pretty good job with it.

I don't mind watching a dubbed movie at all (as long as it's done well). This movie did a good job on the dubbing. I have never seen it in it's original french language so I cannot compare the original voices to the dubbed voices, just as anyone who hasn't heard it dubbed can't compare them either. I like this movie well enough that I will probably watch it in french w/subtitles in the future since I enjoy the repeat viewings.

As with most dubbed movies, well not most, all of em, it totally destroys the picture. Best example being asian movies. Theres so many good asian movies and they come out here only in dubbed version and its like OMFG this SUCKS, then you watch em original with subtitles and its like, *beep* that was a good movie.

To be honest it didn't bother me. Sometimes I'll watch a movie with subtitles to hear how the original actors delivered their lines but since
I don't understand exactly what they're saying I find it distracting. With
Iron Monkey, for example, the subtitles don't match with the English language version. And I think there's several ways to say anything.

If the subtitle says 'be silent', is he really saying 'be quiet' which is polite, or 'shut up' which is more rude, or 'shut it' which sounds like Archie Bunker. Is there a pun in some of the dialogue that get's left out? SOme clever word play that's being left out? With the subtitles, as with the script for the English speaking actors, there is the chance of a mistranslation, and I'm less distracted by that with dubbing.

And to be honest dubbing is ALOT better the 70s action movies. It sounds like they hired actors with giant cartoon noses to get those nasally voices.
