so why isn't Kida a Disney princess?

Hell, even Mulan is one and she isn't even close to being a princess.

The reason is mainly because of it's underperfomance at the box office, therefore Kida is being overlooked. Which is a pity, she's really a quite likeable character.

I think it comes down to the level of success a movie has had and whether the princess is the main character or not. The Black Cauldron and Atlantis don't seem to have had the same mainstream success as that of other Disney princess movies and both characters were not the main protagonists of the storyline. A shame as I'd love to see Princess Eilonwy and Princess Kida added to the line up.

It's all about popularity, rather than royal lineage.
