For the record, his accent was not supposed to be ordinary Irish - it was New York Irish of that time. I forget what it was called, but the accent was researched from reading books written in the vernacular of the time and place and listening to old disks (Those that came before records) of music Hall artists, by then in late eighties, performing.
They filled in the blind-spots with Irish-American. A book I read about the making of Gangs of New York and the book it was based on reference this aspect of the film making.
