This is insulting.

Hey guys. I'm what you call a student of WWII and more specifically, one of the Eastern Front. I am a fan of military history and myself am a member of the US Army. I checked out this film becuase it was staged in the epic battle of Stalingrad. I was very excited about it. I've never seen a film involving Stalingrad before. I have indeed compiled a library of footage from the battle that was filmed from documentaries and the like. But I've never seen a film based on it.

After watching the film I have to say, it was rubbish. I mean, it's a very nice piece of fiction but, it carries no historical weight whatsoever. As an American, even I am offended by the films portrayal of the Soviet Soldiers. No country in the 20th century sacrificed more and lost more than Russia. And to show them in such a crass display of disrespect is appalling. I can't understand why nobody even thought to research this subject. To discount the bravery of the Soviets who at that time did what no other Army had done is wrong.

Where was General Chuikov? Why was there a love story? Really? a freaking love story? These filmmakers want me to believe that amidst the single most horrific battle in human history, a couple of soldiers had time for a little trist? I can't believe that!

I can only hope that someday a major film is made about this battle which is honest, sincere and faithful to the many who have fallen doing the bravest of deeds -- defending their homeland.

The OP should stick to watching documentaries and reading history books if he didn't like this flick. This is a commercial movie made for entertainment.

Are you a true American, or a Russian immigrant and die-hard communist?
Do you really doubts how the regime treated its own people?

I am no expert on WW2, but I am interested.

Funny that no one has mentioned that the Soviets didnt call it WW2 but the Great Patriotic War.
Or that in his book Zaytsev talked of a three day dues with a German sniper.

The Soviets did an amazing thing here, the way they picked up their factories and moved them East to continue production. But dont forget the USA when they got going delivered plenty of material to help them.

The war could not have been one without many factors, including the Soviets, the USA, the British and Commonwealth forces and allies.

to the OP

did you know that Stalin was once Hitlers ally,Stalin didnt mind Hitlers crimes in France and Poland,it was only when Hitler invaed the USSR its self with operation Barbarossa that Hitler became Stalins enemy

now I am not ignorant to the fact, that the US and Britain having to fight Hitlers entire army alone, would have been a completeley different war,and alot more Americans and British would have died, but with that said, the Soviets where never an Ally, they(the Russian government) were/are an nation of murderous thugs, that I will never respect, and after eastern Europe was rid of Nazi Tyrrany, it was replaced with Soviet Tyrrany

lets look at the "Glorius And Brave" Soviet/Russian track record shall we

-Made a Deal with Hitler to stay out of the war with France and Britian, and let Germany have Poland
-the Red Army Engaged in Mass,Regulated rape and murder of civilians from Poland to Berlin
-by 1945,the KGB already had countless spies in place across the US and England, something that hasnt changed to this day, obviosly
-never explained what happened to Americans and British that went missing in Russia, most likely died in a Gulag
-Helped train North Korean and Chinese forces to kill American soldiers during the Korean war,and Stalin even commited Soviet Pilots to the Communist effort
-Secretly provided weapons and training to NVA and Veitcong forces during the Vietnam war
-Secretly built missle silos in Cuba, for the sole purpose of launching nuclear missle attacks against US Citys
-Invaded Georgia without any provication in 2008
-Continues to protect the Terrorist Government in Iran, and offered to share nuclear information with them

now I know this movie is entertainment, its not a ducumentary, but I dont think its disrespectful one bit, I think more movies need to come out, highlighting the "Glorius" red armys "Habits" in World War 2,but a real movie, not like EATG

I guess I don't understand why you are upset with a love story. Practically, If it weren't for the love story, the producers would have lost about 53 per cent of the audience. My wife simply couldn't endure the part about the Russian forces landing and dying at Stalingrad because of the death and destruction. She's part of that 53 per cent.

Love seems to me to imply hope. In the midst of all this horror, it's nice to see some hope.

Ever heard of the Katyn Massacre? You should have since you are such a "fan". Ever read about the NKVD? Visaly was a real sniper "fan" and so was his lover Tania. Of course you knew that, because you are such a "fan". Get off your high horse.

In my opinion, the Soviet communists partly deserved what they got. Let's not forget that in 1939, the Soviets signed a secret pact with HItler to split Poland between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, thus paving the way for Hitler's invasion of Poland and the start of WW2. What's mentioned less is that while Hitler occupied the western half of Poland, Stalin's Red Army ALSO invaded Poland and occupied the eastern half. The Soviets bascially signed a Pact with the Nazis, one that Hitler later reneged on. But the Soviets were cooperating with the Nazis and made a deal so they could also expand their influence. So its not like Russia was innocent in this.

Also the Cold War has always been going on. WW2 was a break, the Soviets were infiltrating America and trying to spread communism in the 20s and 30s and there was a temporary alliance (and only after Hitler invaded Russia, not when Hitler first began his aggression toward his neighbors). I think that America deserves the most credit for winning WW2. Let's also not forget that America basically won the Pacific war single handedly with limited ALlied support, with brutal, savage battles like Guadacanal, Iwo Jima, Midway, and Okinawa that killed countless American soldiers fighting against a brutal and savage enemy. America was basically responsible for winning the Pacific war and the western European front with D-Day and the push across France. The US was also the most important factor in liberating Italy from the Nazis too in the Italian campaign.

I don't. I seriously doubt the US would be able to land in France or Italy if the Soviet Union and the UK weren't involved.

America was basically responsible for winning the Pacific war and the western European front with D-Day and the push across France.

America, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth nations like Canada were responsable. Let us remind us that the British had two beaches just like the Americans had. While the Americans captured Cherbourg, the British captured Caen. The Americans had the Breaucourt Manor assault, the British had Pegasus Bridge.

Of course not related to D-day. But one of the most important battles of world war 2 was the battle of Britain won by the British.

The US was also the most important factor in liberating Italy from the Nazis too in the Italian campaign

Yes and let us remember that what allowed the Italy campaign was the fact that Mediterranean Sea was basicly controled by the Royal Navy after the defeat of the Italian Navy at Taranto and Battle of Cape Matapan. Also they were involved in North Africa for a very long time winning the decisive battle against Rommel at El Alamein.

And then you have the Soviet Union wich was involved in the largest theater of war ever and conquered Berlin.

Polite, succinct, and accurate; you are a scholar and a gentleman.

In the spirit of giving credit where credit is due, US forces didn't get their hands dirty in Europe / North Africa till after the Axis forces were crushed at the second battle of El Alamein. Also, since this board concerns Stalingrad, it's worth mentioning that there was zero US involvement anywhere on the Eastern Front save for the provision of materiel via lend-lease (the importance of which no-one should discount).

Almost every movie about real wars will look like propaganda, at least to some people. In fact, if you feel proud for your own nation after watching a war movie, it is clearly propaganda :)
The goal of this particular movie is very straightforward: capitalize on the stupidity of its viewers. $70 mln budget had to be recovered and no documentary would have done that. Let the happy fools pay for movie tickets or DVDs and stay out of their way :)
Banning this movie in Russia is a funny idea. Think of all those patriotic movies made in USSR during and long after the WW2. Guess what, they still make them. Should they all be banned in the US? No. Who cares, really? John Doe from Texas?
I am sure the current Russian government would be better off allowing movies like this to be shown in Russia. People will watch, people will swear and puke, people will hate "stupid" Americans even more. Goal achieved, Hoorah!

reply

Excellent and valid points all. Propaganda is only useful as a tool to strenghten propagandist's own opinion and to create greater gap between the sides, as it has a distancing effect.
