Tora tora tora much better

If you want a true historical account of The Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor watch Tora Tora Tora ---

The BS inaccuracies of this movie blows my friggin mind ---

reply

very true and the reason is the idiotic love story.
plus tora has loads of suspense as you watch the mistakes
that are made by us while the japanese are taking their
time dotting every i before launching their attack.
sometimes the suspense is hard to endure when you
realize minutes and seconds are being wasted with
countless lives on the line.
there are plenty of background love stories in
real war but they should never appear on
screen together.

Like or dislike the love story, say what you will about it...

But it is NOT the reason for the inaccuracies of the real events. It's separate from.
Take the love story out of the equation and Pearl Harbor is still loaded with historical inaccuracies and bullsh!t.

I'd say more accurate. FAR more accurate actually. But true.... No.
Even Tora Tora Tora has it's mistakes.

Some of which have imprinted themselves so much onto our national psyche that they are taken as actual history.

Yamato's Sleeping Giant quote:
Never said it. It was invented for the film, though it does accurately describe his attitude towards the attack.

Nagumo cancelling the third strike wave:
There never was a third wave planned from the beginning or suggested by Fuchida after the second strike as shown in the film. This is one of many lies told by Fuchida that has been debunked, but for decades was accepted as truth, even made it into a few historical accounts based on interviews with Fuchida for which the scene in Tora Tora Tora was taken.
Fuchida was a pathological liar.

And numerous other smaller mistakes or alterations from actual history. Bratton running all over DC trying to get the brass to heed him and send a warning. Didn't happen the way in the film and Bratton actually deserves some small portion of blame for the delays, having given up after one failed attempt to phone another department, then going home for the night to resume attempting to alert higher-ups in the morning.

I'm currently reading "At Dawn We Slept"; I'm only around page 180 so I have a long ways to go to the attack. Prange did rely a lot on Fuchida; unfortunately (or not, depending on the POV) Nagumo, Yamamoto, and many of the Japanese top brass involved with the PH planning weren't around after the war. I know a third wave wasn't planned, but I've never read anywhere that it was never requested. Nagumo allegedly was 1) satisfied with the results of the first two attacks, which was designed to destroy the US Pacific fleet, and 2) was concerned with the whereabouts of the US carriers and feared being ambushed, so didn't authorize a third wave (most J. losses were in the second wave; despite the damage, the US responded pretty well to the second wave.)

As an aside, perhaps the movie would've been more acceptable if TPTB had stuck with the "love" story including the attack, and stayed away from revising history, which was a miserable fail. I say more acceptable (or maybe less scathed); it still sucked.

Several Japanese Officers that were present to include Minoru Genda, has denied any such suggestion ever came from Fuchida. And in fact not a single person can recall or verify that Fuchida DID suggest such a thing.

That's like saying 2001:A Space Odyssey is better than Lost in Space.
But anyway, true.

I agree Tora,Tora, Tora was much better and more accurate. The love triangle in this movie was not needed and they should have had Edward Herrman portray FDR. Also, I have seen many film footages and pictures of Roosevelt and he did not have that ugly slit on his chin.

reply

I like Jon Voight and I don't think he did a bad job as FDR (though Hermann was superlative in the role) if they hadn't had that scene of him standing up alone. I've seen pics of FDR's legs while swimming at Warm Springs, and they looked like a healthy 5-year olds... sticks.

IIRC, there are a few scenes in Pearl Harbor replicated from Tora, Tora, Tora.

reply

I've seen recent documentaries on WW2 and specifically Pearl Harbor that've used scenes from "T!T!T!" illustrative of the attack. Funny I've yet to see one using Beybominations.

reply

I thought this movie was very much an accurate historical account to what happened. And this was better than Tora Tora Tora because the special effects were much better and this movie was longer so its a better tribute to all those who lost their life in Pearl Harbor

reply

The real aircraft and practical effects in "Tora! Tora! Tora!" were far, far superior to the CGI video game effects in "Pearl Harbor".

Millsey strikes again.

Tora Tora Tora is kind of slow though. I don't watch war films and especially this Pearl Harbor for documentary accuracy, it's an entertaining film that's enough. The love triangle is cringe though.

What annoys me about Tora is using Harvard's/Texans as Zero stand in's.
