anybody hates it because they absolutely can't relate to Amelie?

I love this movie. And it's irrelevant whether I can 'relate' to Amelie, as that's not a prerequisite for enjoying a FICTIONAL movie.

I do, however, UNDERSTAND Amelie. She wants to do the right thing--which is a credo I happen to live by. She wants justice--another credo of mine. So while I can't necessarily relate to the specific ways she goes about doing things, I at least understand why she's doing them.

I couldn't relate to her, but I loved the movie. I was frustrated with her at times as she is so different from me (and most people), but the story was told was beautifuly and innocently that I loved every party of it.

She was shy towards people and by the end she learned not to leave an oppurtunity to find true love, I can relate to that in a sense.

I see where you're coming from. Like someone said above, you'd probably have to be an introvert to understand this. I loved it, I can completely relate to her. :)

You might not be able to relate to Amélie, and since this movie is definitely an emotional movie built around Amélie, it likely did stop you from appreciating the movie.
To all the people saying that it's overrated, I really disagree. People who can really relate to the main character would have loved this movie, as I did.
Also to the few who were saying that you do not need to be able to relate to characters to like a movie, I also have to contest that. You obviously do not need to have had the same experiences as the characters, for example, I have not tried to run away from a Terminator that was sent to kill me, but I could still emotionally connect with the characters.
In movies that I did not like the main character/s because I could not relate to them, I did end up most of the time NOT liking the movie, so I can understand the point of view of people who did not like this movie because they could not relate. That would mean you personally did not like it, but the minority of opinions does not overshadow the majority, so, no, this film is not overrated.
