anybody hates it because they absolutely can't relate to Amelie?

I did
I've never understood this phenomenon of having to be able to "relate" to a character in order to enjoy it.
I can't relate to any of the characters in the Sopranos (at least, none of the major ones), but I still think it's one of the best shows ever created.
I can't relate to any of the characters in Boondock Saints. I have no intentions of ever becoming a vigilante. I still enjoyed the movie, though.
Lol I agree with you. Why the hell should we enjoy only the characters that we can relate to???

I logged on to make this very same comment. It is a growing trend though, the inability to see or relate to anything beyond their own little circle and pre-conceived notions of life. I am not a big "technology blamer' but IMO, the rapid rise of social media is making the narrow minded crowd even more blinkered, like attracts and hangs out with like. Expand your horizons kids.
It is a bit narcissistic, isn't it?
I LOVE it when it's hamburger day!- Romy White
Maybe relate was not the best word choice. Maybe he means that he simply doesn't care about the characters, or what happens to them.
I've felt this way about some movies; was just indifferent. It had nothing to do with their lifestyle or profession. I don't have to relate to them to enjoy a movie, but have to feel something, good or bad.
I guess it's like looking at clouds. You see one thing and I see another. Peace.
You obviously don't know the meaning of word introvert.
shareI agree with CCRider01. I could not relate to any character in Godfather or Taxi Driver but I liked both movies a lot. So, zomfg-overrated, your search for validation in a character does not make the movie any better or worse. However, it makes your opinion less relevant.
shareI remember going to the cinema with my mom and my brother when I was 8 or 9 years old ,I hated this movie ,I watched it again a couple of years ago, again ,it bored the hell out of me.
shareI saw this film in French class many years ago and I felt it was a pretty good film but like many of you, there are a number of things that annoy the hell out of me:
- I didn't like the protagonist as a character. Yes of course, there are lot's of classic films that have despicable people as main characters but this is different. Hannibal Lecter is an awful person but an awesome character. Amélie was a the typical kind-hearted innocent girl but a really annoying and flat character. She was basically everywhere, she was trying to influence everyone's life and she didn't show any real flaws. Her face didn't help me sympathize either. throughout the film I felt they were trying to push this character down my throat.
- I got bored to death by the soundtrack. For some reason, arty French films always seem to have a repetitive soundtrack that either involves a piano or an accordion. The song is also used in countless commercials.
- The high rating. I think there are many European films (and films of this category) that are better than Amélie. I just can't put my finger on why this film is so extremely popular. It didn't have a very interesting premise. The absurdistic French humor was good but not exceptional.
i am in total agreement. many english and french films are way too cute. to the point of being sugary
shareTrue, and I did too...
shareWell, that is because normal people are just plain stupid. It is all about the unique minority that the socially anti-intellectual call "weird".
shareI don't think I HATE this film, but I strongly believe that it's overrated. And I can relate in a certain way to the character cause I'm an introverted person too, I don't think that's the problem. I think this film is way too optimistic, way too romantic, the only expression that could describe it well is "puke rainbows". Yeah, I catch it, colors can express sensations -but hey, is it necessary to put the whole movie in red and green and all the references to love in blue? And yes, the real happiness is in the little things (what a philosophical discovery, btw), but this doesn't mean that all the characters have to be shown in that annoying way of "she's bla bla and he likes bla bla bla and putting hands into bla bla bla and she hates bla bla". I got nervous the first time I saw it, and the second and the third, and I don't think it'll be a fourth time.

When I think movies are overrated, I don't see them 3 times, just to make sure.
shareThey can't relate to Amelie because they are so popular, their blackberry ring-RING!...ALL...DAY...LONG..
They probably think that Amelie is unrealistic, believe me there are more << amelie types>> than you think.
