Why doesn't Law & Order: SVU have a Black female detective?

The last Black female detective, Monique Jeffries, was played by Michelle Hurd, who left the NBC drama more than two decades ago, notes Princess Weekes. "Following the Black Lives Matter movement and discussions about police brutality during the pandemic, the show has tried to maintain a balance between addressing that there are issues with police brutality—while also highlighting the trouble that good cops have from a hyper-critical public eye," says Weekes. "For all that talk, however, Black women are largely absent from prominent roles in the series. Melinda Warner (Tamara Tunie), the go-to medical examiner for the squad, was, after Michelle Hurd’s Jeffries, the only Black female face in the opening credits. Her presence on the series has shrunk since season 13, with some occasional appearances." As Weekes points out, new New York City Mayor Eric Adams has tapped Keechant Sewell, a Black female, as the next NYPD commissioner. "While I do not fully believe that more diversity of cops makes for an inherently better system, as a show, Law and Order: SVU has done its best to present the illusion of at least one department that cares about victims, no matter where they come from," says Weekes. "Yet, jarringly, they have no one reflecting some of the most vulnerable populations in the city—Black and Brown women and femmes."

Princess Weekes 🤣 does it matter what Lindsay Ellis' remora thinks?

But the real answer is "there just aren't".

reply

So what?

REAL LIFE doesn't have a calculated PC ratio of people in each room/ job/ planet!

reply

Because every other detective show has a black lesbian detective with a pregnant wife, including Organized Crime.

reply

Because the show has a Black male detective. And the lead female detective is half-Hungarian, she has her own ethnic thing going on. The series also had a Cuban-American detective, Palestinian detective, Israeli detective, and Native American detective. And Asian-American forensic psychiatrist. And Native American judge, African-American judge, Asian-American judge, etc.

SVU historically has the most diverse casting of any television series, ever. Whoever wrote that blurb has never watched SVU, ever. SVU has ran the gamut of of diversity casting, nationally and internationally. Africans from all over Africa have been depicted on SVU, Asians from all over Asia (Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Japanese, Korean, others), Haitians, South Americans, Central Americans, Mexicans, Cubans, Russians, Ukrainians, Bosnians, Serbians, Ultra Orthodox Jews, Palestinian Christians, Palestinian Muslims, Pakistani Muslims, Pakistani Christians, Bosnians, Serbians, Romani, Indian Muslims, Iranians, Native Americans, there is no other show in existence that is as diverse as SVU. Anybody who says otherwise has never at any time watched SVU. European characters, Canadian characters, of course American characters, etc. There's a reason why the series has been going strong for 24 years. There's a reason why top-tier elite actors and actresses from all over the globe ask to be cast on SVU. There is no other series on television with such a visionary, international-thinking, humanistic band of writers and producers.

Where is the Native-American Detective? The last one they had was Det. Chester Lake portrayed by Adam Beach in the Ninth season, but then the wrote him off as a stereotype of his culture and we watched him taken off in handcuffs and narry a word about him since. That was season nine.

reply

Chester (Adam Beach) was whom I was referring to (Native Canadian American)

reply

cause this show sucks and no actor wants to screw up their CV?

reply

Because they already have enough black lesbian detectives with pregnant wives on several other shows.

reply

Why don’t they have an Asian detective? Asian hate crimes are at an all time high.

reply

I guess Hartigay being Iranian qualifies somehow.
