How did Teddy Bass KNOW that Don Logan never phoned from Heathrow?

I was just wondering. Remember how at the table scene where "Gal" tells "Teddy Bass" that Don Logan returned from Spain and phoned him from Heathrow, and then Teddy tells him "But he never phoned from Heathrow", HOW DID Teddy know that Don Logan never actually phoned from Heathrow airport? Did Teddy Bass like have all the phones bugged at Heathrow airport or checked through some kind of tele-communications device? Did he have friends who worked at Heathrow airport to check if Don Logan could've made phone calls from there?

Or did Teddy Bass just assume that he never phoned from Heathrow because he knows Don Logan (Ben Kingsley) would never use a phone from the airport? Anyone know? Thanks!

I think Teddy "knew" from intuition what had really happened - he knew all the players well enough to figure it all out. But Teddy didn't have proof and it was a guess on his part. He acted sure of himself to throw Gal off - he pretended that he had inside information to try to get an admission from Gal.

That whole conversation scene at the restaurant was so fascinating to watch because many things were being said under the surface. Teddy knew Gal was lying, Gal knew Teddy knew he was lying - and yet Gal continued to lie even though he was scared to death the entire time.

Teddy let Gal get away with it because Teddy got what he wanted - he scared Gal out of his wits, let him know he knew he was lying, reaped the benefits from the heist, and wound up not having to give Gal anything for it (other than a fiver). I also suspect that Teddy may have been a little relieved to be rid of Don; he knew he was a loose cannon getting worse by the minute and would mess things up big-time eventually. I think what Teddy really wanted was assurance that Don's body would never be found.

"If I cared, Gal, if I f$%^ing cared...." - that was Teddy's way of telling Gal that he would be dead too if Don hadn't been expendable to Teddy.

Gal´s a pretty cool customer and a good liar after all, managing to keep his composure while confronted with someone as intimidating - and lethally dangerous - as Teddy Bass. I just might have believed him if I didn´t have a pretty good idea otherwise

When Bass questions him you can also see it as a test. If Gal can keep his composure and story under pressure from evil crime lord Teddy Bass, he can probably do it with the police as well.

Another aspect is showing his authority. Even though he doesn't care about Logan he can't just have people like Gal go around killing people who work for Teddy. This is why he makes him forgo his cut. In the end Teddy is very happy with the whole operation. Logan, a potential loose cannon is out of the way. Gal is retired and planning to stay that way, not representing any threat. And he gets to keep both Gal and Logan's cut from the heist.

Holy *beep*

I've literally written this, almost word for word, in another thread!

Love that scene.
Always makes me hungry too as Gal is heartily tucks into that breakfast! LOL

Well Teddy knows that Don didn't get his flight back and didn't get another flight back so it's not exactly a leap to figure out that if he didn't fly then he couldn't have phoned Gal from Heathrow.

He tells Gal point blank that Don never left Spain.

he's teddy bass. that's why he knows.

Teddy "knew" because sometimes when people lie they give too much extra information to try and seem more plausible.

It is out of character for Don to make a "courtesy call". Gal has over-egged the story - so Teddy knows.

Exactly, I'm sure he was kicking himself for mentioning the "phone call". When lying it's always best to tell as much of the truth as possible, and no more.

reply

This is true. Exactly what I thought. And there was another give-away that he was lying. The first time he tells the fib, he says Don called him from Heathrow to tell him he landed safely (on obvious whopper). The next time - the table scene with Teddy - now he says Don called him to confirm he would be seeing him on Friday when he arrives for the job.
That is a sure "tell".
When someone states something highly implausible, and when questioned about it, some of the details change slightly and the story becomes more plausible, chances are, they are lying.

reply

This one's easy. Because does anybody think that the character of Logan would call anybody to tell them he arrived safely? He was a narcissistic brute, and narcissistic brutes don't care if people know if they've landed ok or not.
