Depiction of French and their motivation for involving the war

I just realised that reasons of French involvement and help to American colonies were explained for liberty in the movie. Total Rubbish. But this is an Emmerich movie so who cares it? France in up until 1789-92 (ten years before War of American Indepencedence) was absolue monarchy. There was not even a parliment , house of commons let alone liberty or freedom in France between 1774-83. (Evil Britain had them though even freedom of press and expression in 18th century) And French flag LOL ALL WRONG...Not tricolor (which American audience only can recognize) but three Fleurs of Bourbon dynesty it was supposed to be.

I too would have liked them to mention the hypocrisy of France assisting in independence from a monarchy... the funding, in part, led to the revolution in France. But paying for people to rebel against their monarch is kinda funny when you are a monarch. Then the poor guy got his head chopped off.

France and England were always bitter enemies, so it makes sense though.

It's true the flag was used so people could recognize it.

Frances main reason for joining the war was to curtail the rise of the britain.

I think it's a matter of interpretation that the movie proclaims France's involvement was about Colonial liberty more than English defeat. Well the only words you're going on is the dialogue 'Viva la liberté' right at the end just two guys talking. The French character on numerous occasions demonstrates his motivation for involvement.

Yes, obviously France took part in this war to avenge its bitter defeat in the previous Seven Years War (1754-1763), which unlike the previous one (the war of Austrian Succession (1740-1748)) was lost by France and won by the UK (both sides along with other major nations) which led to a treaty in which France lost most of its 1st colonial empire (North America (France had most of what is now central USA + a bit of east/north-east Canada) and a non-negligible part of south-east India) to the advantage of the UK.

That said, there were many French volunteers led by Lafayette fighting alongside the American rebels (and they did so also for the ideas) even before France decided to take part to the war.

As for the French Monarchie Absolue, the extent of the power of the French monarch of the time is often exaggerated, and it was not then the horrible tyranny it is often depicted. It has to be relativized a bit.

"There was not even a parliment"

There were actually parliaments in France, even though their power and counterweight to the monarchy can not really be compared to that of the UK.

"but three Fleurs of Bourbon dynesty it was supposed to be"

Fleur-de-Lys was not only the symbol of the Bourbons but of all the Capetians (among whom the the Bourbon are only a branch, like the Valois or the Orléans) who ruled France from 987 to 1848 (with interruptions as you know during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era - i.e. roughly 1792-1815).

"But this is an Emmerich movie so who cares it?"

This movie is not fully historically accurate, of course.
IIRC, It's not shown that the French had sent many soldiers (beside money, ammunitions, weapons, etc...) in the USA and that there were as much French regular soldiers than American regular soldiers during the decisive siege of Yorktown (and IIRC there were even more French casualties than Americans), beside the French fleet putting the last nail in the English coffin.

Why would any of you try and amuse yourself with the complex historical perspectives of crap of the matter facts and ignore the more interesting modern facts of blatantly ignoring the constitution and cops wiping their asses with it? Kidnapping people at whim! Maybe you blocked it out for stress reasons, or are maniacally strategic and evil at heart like such and such and blah blah
12 years of education mandatory and they mention it every year and cops start wiping their ass with it and kidnapping you and you get all giddy and start discussing historical prissy bullshit instead like you can't wait to get kidnapped by police officer for petty crap
