Do people still talk on those radios?
Do people still talk on ham radios these days? You know, just for fun?

Yep, I've got a friend who has a license and talks on one.
You never know, when the zombie apocalypse happens we may need them.

My grandfather had a whole room of Ham equipment. He even had one in his car. There used to be signs at road construction sites to turn them off to prevent explosives from detonating. He was K1MLV, I still have his old license plate!
Remember Rabbit Ears with tin foil?
Often people who are talking on ham radio are doing things like attempting longer distance communication on less power and smaller antenna.
It's like a game of trying to get the most out of the least.
That's not the only reason, but yes it is still done quite a lot.

Both my parents and I are licensed. I know a high school near where I used to live has a marginally active ham radio club; I assume some other schools do as well.
shareI'll never forget, when I was a long distance operator for Pacific Telephone (so many years ago). There was a man with a ham radio who would pick up U.S. service men from all over the world and place calls for them. He was so nice to talk to and I found myself looking forward to placing those calls for him. They were all collect, of course so the call was only charged from CA to where he was calling. After seeing this movie, I found myself thinking of him and wondering if he's still around. (It's on right now, so here I am.)

Yes people still use ham radios. Not just for fun. If a natural disastor wipes out a local power grid, these long range radios can be the only way to communicate with rescue crews and the rest of the outside world.
