Do people still talk on those radios?
Do people still talk on ham radios these days? You know, just for fun?
The truth ain't like a bunch of puppies running around you pick your favorite!

Oh GOOD!,my dog found the chainsaw
The radio in the film would still broadcast fine. You do need take a test and get a callsign. And most Amateur Radio users or hams as they like to call themself do it for fun. And the radios are 90 percent smaller than the 1 in the film.
Haven't been active for about 15 years but my first receiver was an SB303 coupled with a Yaesu FL101 xmitter. Got my license in 1976.
shareA few years ago, I pulled my late Father's (he passed in 1990) amateur radio equipment out of storage and had it serviced. Also got my amateur radio operator's license ("general" class). I must admit I was at least partly inspired to do so by this movie; replicating the appearance of his old radio desk as closely as possible. It is a kind of time machine for me. My only disappointment is I can't make myself heard too well (due to my rel. small dipole antenna and mountainous area I'm in).
shareThe radio shown on camera was actually a receiver only and could not transmit, but ham radio operators are still actively transmitting and receiving. Some of the ham equipment that is 50 years old or older is still being used today by hams that keep it in good repair.

Yep, my husband and I are getting our amateur radio licenses in September. I have always loved radio, and can't wait to make a hobby out if it.
shareActually, there are people who talk in a similar way (long distance, vintage radio equipment) but using a more primitive way: morse code. Yeah, like sending a telegram but in real time, like a "morse code written xat". This system is of course more primitive but allows to communicate between very very long distances.

Yes I have my amateur radio license and it is an enjoyable hobby. In times of emergency like hurricanes and after the 9/11 attacks, ham radio is the only reliable means of communications.
