Oh it is so underrated. Love, love, love this movie. Even my grandfather liked it. And he hated sci-fi/fantasy stuff. At first I thought it was just because of the firefighter element, but he liked the story and dynamics between the characters too.

It is such a great movie. If I could only watch 3 movies for the rest of my life, it would be on my list.

I agree completely. It is a much underrated film. It has just the right seeding the way it combined a murder mystery with a sci-fi. If one is not the type to let their imagination stretch a bit, then they might as well seek entertainment elsewhere.
As many in this post mentioned already, this is a great film to re-watch over and over again. I just saw it earlier for the umpteenth time. You can always spot some little details that you may have missed before, that is unless you are blessed with a photographic memory which I'm not.

So much attention to detail and subtlety, interwoven in the dialog and every scene... a lot of overlooked artistry in this film.

Couldn't agree more.. I only heard about this movie few weeks ago by chance.
I was totally hooked by the movie and the great play from the cast. Still can't understand how I managed to miss this movie by 12 years... but it's never too late to catch up and this is certainly a very good moment to spend for young generations!

It's an average thriller with sloppy scifi elements and mostly bad acting (except Cazievel and Mitchell)... not exactly an Oscar winner.

I just rented this a few days ago because I'm so in love with The Caller (a much inferior film though, I know), so I went to the Caller boards and many were basically saying it was influenced/ or even a rip-off of Frequency (which I'd never even heard of until about a week ago)....

All I can say is... FANTASTIC FILM! People are right on here: it does have an "old Hollywood" feel to it, and although I'm a liberal myself, you can't deny the family values/conservative "agenda" in Frequency is what it made it so golly-darned good! Hollywood just doesn't make films like this anymore, and it's sad. But, at least I'm slowly learning my French, Russian, and Korean now! ;)

Just sayin'...

OK, had to reply again, here. I've already explained in detail why I love this movie so much, and why all the people I've lent my DVD (and now Blu-Ray) copy to do too, but I wanted to tell everyone what happened when I watched the Blu-Ray with my sister, who had never seen it before, or even heard about it until I told her about it.

First of all, the Blu-ray looks excellent.

Second, my sister who said it "sounded like a guy-flick" because of "all the cops/firefighter/baseball/sci-fi stuff" absolutely loved it too. She started practically bawling when father and son started communicating over the ham radio, especially when John started to tear up. She was so transfixed near the end she kept repeating..."oh, please, please, please, don't tell me so-and-so dies!"

She ordered her Blu-Ray almost immediately after seeing it.
