Cool? No. He proved he was cool with Jaws. He solidified his coolness forever with Raiders of the Lost Ark.

This was absolutely Spielberg attempting to prove he was still relevant. After Schinder's List he became a different sort of filmmaker and people wondered if he could still make a fun adventure movie anymore. I also think he wanted to prove he could make a kick ass scifi movie, cause AI was never really his project and I think it annoyed him.
