Moves like The Limey?

What are some other gritty revenge movies like The Limey, and please no one list the Kill Bill movies, those are good but I'm talking about small scale revenge movies. Thanks.

How about Point Blank (1967), starring Lee Marvin? An American remake called Payback was made some years ago with Mel Gibson.

reply

You might also like to check out The Outfit - it's based on a novel by the same author as The Hunter (which inspired the movies Point Blank and Payback, also suggested by a previous post).

reply

Yeah, _Point Blank_ (of which some consider _The Limey_ -- wrongly, I think -- to be a semi-remake) was the first thing to spring to mind, and _The Outfit_ (of which I am the proud owner of a VHS copy) is another good example in a similar vein. (The author of those two was probably the partial inspiration for the George Stark character in Stephen King's _The Dark Half_, BTW.)

But let's not forget some good *English* crime thrillers as well. Let's see, there was the original _Get Carter_, starring Michael Caine, back around 1970, and soon after that _Sitting Target_, starring the late, great Oliver Reed as a violent prison escapee seeking revenge in one of the first films to be rated X just for its violence.

Some other modern British crime/gangster/caper movies have been fairly noteworthy, though I wouldn't classify either as a revenge drama, per se. Let's see, _Sexy Beast_ was interesting, as was _Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels_.

Try and get your hands on a copy of the 1971 version of Get Carter. Michael Caine turns in an astounding performance.Actually, I think The Limey was probably inspired by that film.

reply

It's possibly since the original screenplay was written with Michael Caine in mind. The Bride Wore Black (Truffant) is another revenge film. It's in french. A lot people said Kill Bill is a rip off of this movie, even though Taratino claimed he never saw the film.

Get Carter is available because I watched it yesterday.

How about the Coen's brothers Blood Simple, a little more on the dark side but an awesome revenge film as well.

Cheers!

I would also suggest the original "Get Carter" with Michael Caine (altho' why a person born and brought up in Newcastle has a cockney accent, I'm not sure).
Had to watch the film a few times to fully follow the plot

I also thought of Sexy Beast while watching it.

In that I thought Stamp did a flawless job in this movie, as opposed to Kingsley's much-heralded performance in Sexy Beast.....which I consider pretty hammed up.

Crash!? Are you high?

For a decent Brit revenge flick, don't miss 'Dead Man's Shoes'. Really tense and hard boiled.

Im going to be slightly biased here and say a lot of the films the op is after are going to be from the UK, for some reason its seems to be a genre were are good at (obviously not to say other countries dont produce gritty films).
Right back to recommendations - most have already been mentioned so again

Get Carter (the original only!)
Sitting Target
Straightheads
Ill Sleep When Im Dead

reply

Agreed! Dead Man's Shoes all the way!

reply

I would suggest

1) the magician
2) the hit
3) shanghai triad

I agree with "the Hit" and "Sexy Beast" both great movies;
of course the original "Get Carter" is a stone cold classic;
you might also want to check out "Mona Lisa" and "The Long Good Friday"

City of Industry- one of keitels most underrated performances

Gangster No 1- For me Gangster ties as malcolms greatest film character with Alex, and Mick Travis (If.../O Lucky Man!)

-also similar feel of going back and fourth through time periods,
though this is a bit more linear than the limey

reply

dead man's shoes is awwwwful.

reply

Great film, forgot about that, well deserves a mention

You tell im I'm coming

I think this movie is at least as much about regret as it is about revenge. Granted, IMDb has not listed regret among its keywords, but it should. (And I just fixed that.)

For the above reason, I will go with a grossly counterintuitive choice and suggest Broken Flowers.

'Atlantic City'

'Sydney/Hard Eight' (its the same movie, 2 different titles). PTA's first film highly influenced by the above film.

'city by the sea' - Robert de niro (Very similar to the Limey but he is trying to save his son).

Dead Man's Shoes is great but quite a bleak film. You may also like Straightheads with Gillian Anderson and I'll Sleep When I'm Dead.

I also recommend:

Get Carter

Mona Lisa

The Long Good Friday

check out the movie called DEAD MAN"S shoes . awesome movie . also has a high rating on imdb !

Blood Simple is not a revenge movie (Honestly? Who is revenging whom and for what?). Nor is Hard Eight(A wrong is righted, but with kindness, not vengeance). But a revenge movie on a smaller scale is Mike Hodges' I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, which, like the Limey, is essentially one long flashback, and uses a fair amount of cross cutting at first. It's about as subtle and understated as a revenge film can get--there is very little violence. You'll be disappointed if you watch it expecting a "rip roaring rampage of revenge." But if you have a little patience, its a very rewarding movie.
