I've been getting into this show lately. I only watched it sporadically when it was on the air. Doug and Carrie are really flawed. But they are so funny. Perfect people are boring. On the first season of Newhart when he ran the inn in Vermont, the housekeeper was such a wonderfully sweet, perfect girl. They ditched her in the next season for her cousin Stephanie, the flawed, self involved brat. Bob Newhart said that the first character was just not funny, too perfect.
Doug is such a child in so may ways. I just watched the episode when he was upset that the new guy at work didn't invite him to his barbecue. He had Deacon ask the guy if he liked Doug. It drove him crazy when they guy said that he could take him or leave him. Doug acts like an adolescent.
He said that Carrie isn't liked at work but it doesn't bother her. She set out to become popular by forcing a makeover on a drab co-worker. Carrie is so self involved and tart tongued. Doug was enjoying the time when she'd come home after having apple-tinis with a co-worker. She was mellow. Very funny episode!
