Does the rape scene seem a bit gratuitous?

That maybe Mr Verhoven made that scene particularly for the adolescents and pervy audience to masturbate over, and that perhaps he was going just a bit too far with that scene? I didn't see any strong moral or ethical meaning behind it, I just think it was soft-core rape porn.

Not that I'm complaining, Rhona Mitra is hot.

WHAT'S IN THE BOX??????

It was necessary. It showed the lack of moral character that Sebastian had. It showed that the power to pretty much do whatever he wanted without being seen was going to his head. It set the tone for the rest of his actions.

reply

Maybe it was necessary to include, but it was very explicit imo. Rape isn't sexy, it's not something that should be shown in films as w..ank material.

reply

Explicit? Oh, come on.

We know he went in, we seem her thrown to the bed. THAT'S IT.

No humping. No sexual activity. You consider that explicit?

reply

I might've seen a director's cut, but there was a bit where she's on the bed, her breasts are out and she's moaning and thrusting back and forth. Look man, I'm no prude whatsoever, I just don't find rape sexy and think it shouldn't be glamorised. Rape scenes in Straw Dogs and Clockwork Orange don't bother me, because there's a point to them and a moral point to be made, but in a film like this, it's uncalled for... Again, sex scenes I've got no problem with, no matter how explicit. But rape is an evil.

It seems you feel the fact that this scene is in a film at all, mandates it was meant to be "sexy". What do you find glamorizes rape in the scene? She is very hurt as I remember.. There is a stigma in hollywood that sex needs to be glamorous, few films seem to even attempt to accurately depict it. But, as the other guy said, this scene shows depths of action one would possibly (likely?) sink to if those actions were completely there own knowlege. It has been a while since Ive seen it so I really am curious as to your thoughts.

"Knock some sense on me baby."

reply

I didn't think it was disturbing the tiniest bit. How many times did you see that woman's tits in this movie? She just had it coming.

That opinion is revolting >:(.

NO ONE "has it coming"! PERIOD!

reply

Well, considering Sebastian was the only one I rooted for in this movie, they all had it coming.

But that's the movie makers' fault.

reply

Have you never seen a horror movie before? Women who get naked get messed up.

reply

This opinion is horrible. No one has it coming no matter what they look like. No one deserves to be raped except maybe rapists so they know what it feels like.

the truth will set you free

reply

Disgusting comment. Rapists have feelings too.

reply

The theatrical cut is as described, tossed on the bed, then cut away to aftermath.

There were deleted scenes on the DVD, and presumably those are in the "director's cut", now, which were certainly more graphic.

As far as the point of the scene, the idea was that he'd crossed the line from somewhat perverted to outright psychopathology.

Yes, you could've "implied" it but the overall point was to make it blatantly clear that he was, in fact, evil.

"Straw Dogs and Clockwork Orange don't bother me" You ever seen The Accused or Prince of Tides? Those rape scenes really got to my stomach so badly that I almost puked my guts out.

I hated how Cain got away with rape and no one will know what became of that woman, she was violated and humiliated and will never know the face.

reply

Making references to rape in Clockwork and Straw Dogs then saying it's okay in those films is the dumbest sh-t I've ever heard. Those rape scenes especially in clockwork are shown for the exact same reason... to make these characters seem like terrible people and show the extent of their violence. How do justify one but not the other? It's just stupid.

reply

I believe you saw a director's cut, too. In the regular version I saw in the theater, the rape scene was not as explicit.

I don't think the director's cut version was necessary, but the regular version was appropriate. By that I mean, it wasn't too graphic and it definitely marked the turning point of Kevin Bacon's character from a mildly-good guy to a straight-up bad one.

reply

I think it really helps show him becoming less and less of a human after the experiment.
He even says "Don't you even think about it." to himself before doing it.
Sure, he was an ass before but he still had boundaries, then eventually he no longer cared and did whatever pleased him.

reply

That scene scared the *beep* out of me, I mean being raped by someone you don't see, you can only feel what 'he' is doing and unable to stop him. I wished that the gang somehow found out about the woman's ordeal and I don't know let her know that everything is alright now that the Invisble bastard is dead.

You people are all stupid. That woman was flashing her tits all over the entire damn movie, which of course was apparently *not* disturbing, but then you complain about a rape scene?
Oh my god, grow the F up. It's a movie, nothing more. I feel sorry for your future wife already.

reply

what do you mean flashing her tits. She was in the privacy of her own apartment. You can be nude in your own apartment. Just because you are the viewer of the movie does not mean she was flashing all over the place.

reply

You can imagine Linda seeing a newspaper article about a woman claiming to have been raped by an invisible man. Linda slowly closes the newspaper and goes about her day.

reply

Agreed.

reply

The entire movie was gratuitous. Every chance the director got he showed boobs.

reply

Th director has a huge breast and nipple fetish ...

reply

Is there such a thing as a small breast and nipple fixation?

reply

Th director has a huge breast and nipple fetish

Who doesn't?

CG gore is the worst thing that has ever happened to the horror genre.

I watched the TV edited version so I didn't even get to see it. Anyone have a link?

The movie was a summer "blockbuster" and def was catered to the "scream/teenie slasher" audience, which in the late 90s was a thing. I first saw this when it came out, I was about 12, and I felt a bit weird. I have grown to really be bothered by rape scenes, but actually id say this one isn't that bad. If you think about it, this scene is inherent to the plot as others have pointed out, because it actually shows a transformation from "if anyone was invisible they'd be a bit curious, why not take a little peep?", and this scene transforms him into someone who isn't merely curious but malicious as well. The scene itself, I wouldn't say is over the top. Just recently I was watching basic stuff like FX and A&E and both have shows with random, much more intense rape scenes (and its just regular TV). On the other hand, the scene where he fondles a woman's breast, the way that scene is done is a bit weird and probably isn't necessary. Like I said, there's a certain layer of voyuerism that the movie is trying to explore, the kind many would experience if they just turned invisible and there were no consequences. Id hope that for most people, this wouldn't include rape, but I certainly remember thinking "id wanna see naked women too if *I* was invisible", especially being a 12 year old boy at the time. Maybe I didn't process the heavy implications of rape at the time. Btw, not all of Clockwork's horrible rape scenes are necessary either. Does he REALLY need to kill a woman with a porcelain penis? Did they REALLY need that many rape scenes? I find Clockwork's stuff alot more disturbing than I do this movie, which is basically just kind of event horizon on earth with invisibility and a little bit of moral compass thrown in. I remember when these kind of bad, but fun movies were really common, kinda miss them.

I also miss funny teen slashers. The Faculty is one of my favs. Good mix of comedy and satire, hard to find these days besides super stereotypical stoner-slashers like "Hansel and Gretel Get Baked". But that's a different story
