The book goes into considerably more story and character building detail in both Inman's journey home from the war and Ada's learning from Ruby to cope with Appalachian farm life. To me, the people Inman encounters on the walk home each have captivating stories of their own that could become novels in themselves. Same can be said about the people that Ada meets but to a lesser degree. Very little of this is portrayed in the movie. Personally, I think the movie would have fared much better as a mini-series and would have been memorable for decades to come. It is not a bad adaptation, just not a particularly good one from trying to synopsize a very good novel into a movie.

Yes, someone has.

Perhaps the OP just wants to reach out for some sense of community.

I loved the book, too. The only point I can make to recommend it, besides what others have said, is the following:

The chapters alternate between Inman and Ada. At the end of each chapter, I would be so immersed in that part of the story, I would sort of rush and skim through the first pages of the alternate character's tale so I could return to the character in the previous chapter. But then by the end of that chapter, I would be so fully absorbed in the other story, I didn't want to break from that character either.

Brilliant writing to create two stories, only superficially connected, and be able to make them equally compelling.

Gut wrenching brutality, tempered with unconditional generosity that you ached to see rewarded. . .

I don't know how anyone found the book slow-going.
