Charmed Prequel Might be coming to The CW

More than three years after CBS passed on the Charmed reboot they were working on -which is still talked about a lot by fans all over the world- The CW has landed a prequel to the cult WB series produced by the team of critically acclaimed dramedy Jane The Virgin.

Jane The Virgin creator Jennie Snyder Urman, as well as producer Brad Silverman, are behind the project which will follow three witches who fight evil in a small New England town during the eighties (1976), possibly the Halliwells’ ancestors from the Warren Line, the most powerful line of witches in history introduced in the original show.

Nothing is impossible, the word itself says I'm possible.

It's funny. When I first read the word "prequel" I thought - OH, NO! Not a series about the Charmed Ones as teenagers before they knew they were witches!

Then I read this - that it could be about a set of three witches who could be Warren ancestors (although the original Charmed series tried so hard to say that the Charmed Ones were the first set of three sisters to the points that they made the ones in 'Pardon My Past' cousins rather than sisters when sisters would've made so much more sense, especially because then P. Bowen could've truly been the Patty's favorite Aunt Phoebe and not favorite first-cousin twice-removed.) and I must admit that makes it more interesting.

1976 is part of the 70's, not part of the 80's. But this means the Charmed Ones would already be born...

Hmmm...I wonder if they mean 1876 which could make them ancestors.

Now *that's* the sort of prequel I could get into, especially if these witches relied on the sort of magic that the Charmed Ones learned about in 'All Halliwell's Eve' as compared to powers. And especially because this would be before a witch could have a child with her whitelighter or have the most powerful child ever born. Just that could make this better than the original.

With CW mentioned, I just knew it had to mean prequel about the Halliwell sisters ancestors or something. Maybe the reason they set it up in 1976 is so they could have occasional cameos of little Charmed Ones along with Grams, Patty, Sam and Victor. And seeing it's a prequel, original actors and actresses can play their future parts when the story calls for it. Heck even the future generation can be involved or even become regular if time travel is involved. I guess it's a win-win.

Whether it's two sisters and a cousin, or two sisters and one step-sister or even all three cousins, still excited.

I'm also glad CW is involved. So far, enjoying all of their supernatural, superheroes and sci-fi shows.

Nothing is impossible, the word itself says I'm possible.

Do you think that's what they mean? But then why would they say the witches might be Warren ancestors in New England??? Unless it START in 1976 and they go back in time...that could be interesting.

But if it's about them as kids...no, I wouldn't even give it a chance.

Funny, when I saw The CW, I thought, "Oh, no, not The WB all over again!" Although I haven't watched any of the superhero series so I really don't know how similar to The WB The CW is. My TV was on the blink for a while, so I'm quite a bit behind.

But if you and others think they're doing a good job (and it seems like most people do), then I'm getting excited again. Just so they're not kids or teenagers.

Um, what now?

*rubs brain*

Babies kill TV shows!

I hope they do it right, not to sound like a pun but the original did survive on it's huge heart and charm during the final 2 seasons. Sex and the City had it's own little prequel on the CW and nobody cared and it vanished without a trace and nobody remembers it, because it didn't have the same ''magic'' the original show did.

reply

Am just not excited about this at all. I'm tired of reboots/remakes/prequels/whatevers anyway. Now to do to Charmed. Ick. Just not excited at all about it. Can't people just watch the original series - isn't that enough?

😕 I loved Charmed, but a show set in the 70s doesn't sound interesting at all to me. At least not a Charmed show in the 70s.

If they were going to reboot Charmed I think they should look foward, not backward. They could have recast the Chris and Wyatt roles and start when they are teens. Then we could see them, and the other Charmed one's children instead and follow them in new stories rather than rehashing or retconning things that already happened.

When I read this article, I was somehow excited, but I think you brought good points.
When we are dealing with a prequel, then we know what it is gonna be like and I don't really see what else can we see that we haven't in Charmed, especially in season 1.

I would really like for them to focus on further generations with jumping to aspects grom the past like usuall.

Since it's going to be set in 1976 I wonder if we get to see a tie in to "That 70's Episode" in some way

Holly's response on twitter was "We wish them Well" . Not sure if she's happy with it or not

reply

It's going to bomb. They've tried to redo Charlie's Angels and Beverly Hills 90210--which were also Spelling series.

both shortly tanked. They did not live up to the original.

Combs was saying very politely she knows that this will flop too. Note she did not say that she was herself going to participate in it, or watch it. And she did not say that she knows that they will succeed.

reply

I would have preferred a post forever charmed continuation with the older phoebe, piper, and paige. However if it somehow ties into the original series then it could work. Maybe one episodes brings about the future halliwell sisters after the events of finale in a time travel story.

reply

*nods* Me, too.

Although we *sorta* get that with the comics.

reply

For a second, I thought Holly's response read: "I wish them Hell." O.o

reply

Ancestors. Unless Penny had sisters or it's about Grams and Patty it isn't going to work. We know how it ends since the sisters didnt talk or see them meaning they died.

And I'd prefer what it originally sounded like - true Warren ancestors back in the 1700s or 1800s, and in New England rather than San Francisco. I was really excited about that...but this? Um, no.

Although I saw this at another site:

I think I prefer the fact that they are friends, we don't need the rehashed sister plot again. This prequel will be set in the same world so I suppose there will be demons, whitelighters (please don't do a witch/whitelighter romance), and maybe talk of the famous Warrens, but that's probably about it. personally, I don't want these characters anywhere near the Warrens, the further away they are the better imo, so as to not mess up their continuity even more.

If it was something more like that, it would be easier to accept - as long as these three don't have the Power of Three and any baddie in "Charmed" who needed the Power of Three to vanquish doesn't show up and no witch/whitelighter romances since Leo and Piper were the first since Patty and Sam.

That same person who wrote that post wrote this this morning:

Oh God I had a horrible nightmare last night that this new show was being written by Brad Kern and he made it exactly like Charmed seasons 5-8, and in the show, he played every demon. That's about all I remember.
Now *that's* what you call scary!

The reason Secret Circle got axed due to overblown production cost. Ever wonder why most of CW's Special effects heavy shows film Canada? Cause it is way cheaper there with all the tax breaks and stuff. Supergirl wouldn't have survived on that network without the need to move to Vancouver. The thing is Charmed reboot will likely be filmed in Canada but since this is also a period drama it'll be likely be filmed in Toronto than Vancouver. Reign filmed in Toronto.

In a few years all CW show will be filmed in Canada unless the show can land tax breaks in area in US like what happened with CEG. TVD I think moved to Atlanta due to that but it is far too expensive now hence the axe.

reply

Though I would've loved Wyatt and Chris show, CW is a small network and they won't pay that much to get those old actors back. They're too expensive and with how the old actresses are acting about the reboot, I won't get them just to get even with their unprofessional-ism.

reply

I don't get why Charmed fans are freaking out. This may not get the green light. Also the original show wasn't that good either, so this has the chance to be either better or just as bad

reply

Well, I for one, when there's a reboot, want one that will fix the problems with the original and make it better. That is why I don't want the Charmed Sons and don't want a continuation unless it's a one-time TV movie with the originals - it would just have all of the same consistency problems that Charmed has always had. This one sounds like it would just have those same old problems and to top it off, it wouldn't be about sisters who happen to be witches, which is what made Charmed special to me.

The first couple of seasons (with Shannen Doherty) were kinda good. It was not high brow--but it was watchable.

It got campy later on when they tried to cash in on Harry Pottermania. They stopped focusing on sisterhood and brought in a stupid blond named Billie.

reply

And I'm afraid any reboot might be more like the last four seasons than the first four....

It's going to be worse
