Who should have played Norman Bates

In my opinion they should have had Zachary Quinto who plays Sylar from Heroes be Norman Bates cause he be perfect for the role. Right?

reply

Zac Efron!!

No, I'm just kidding.

Leo DiCaprio would have been good, but too young. Jake Gyllenhaal, maybe.

Hopelessly in love with Uma Thurman, Ziyi Zhang, Emmy Rossum, and Vanessa Ferlito

reply

Dude, Josh Hartnett would've been perfect as Norman Bates. He and Anthony Perkins have a lot of facial similarities, even their mannerism is comparable.

reply

I don't understand the speculation. Vince Vaughn was very good. He was understated and very creepy as Norman Bates. What is the point of saying "So and so should have played Norman...."? Vaughn is, I believe, BETTER than Perkins. He's much more real and not a mannered performance. Vaughn had me totally convinced that he was a complete nutter who could appear harmless and normal to the outside world. I LOVE ya Vince. You were perfectly cast imo.
Cheers,
Carcuss.

Vince Vaughn stinks on ice..what an insulting choice.

The first time I saw this movie was on cable when I was channeling surfing and the scene I saw was when the missing woman's boy friend comes along with her sister to find her. Not seeing anything else in the movie and knowing the original, in that scene, I wasn't really sure who was Norman Bates. I then saw the entire movie, and leading into it that scene wasn't as odd, but Vince Vaughn wasn't a strong enough Norman Bates to me. It might have very well been the direction he was given.

I could certainly see the role of Norman Bates being played by Christian Bale for sure. Another choice might be Jon Hamm.

Vaughn WAS better than Perkins. I agree!

Huh? Norman Bates is supposed to be young, a young, vulnerable & handsome 20 something guy. Also, Leo D. is about 6 years older than Jake. They should've cast a 20 something guy for the role, Quinto would've been a good choice, Jake would've been too young in 1998.

SUPPOSED to be? Have you read the book?

reply

Nope. I'm basing it on the classic Hitchcock movie.

Jake Gyllenhaal is 6 years younger than Leonardo DiCaprio.

No-one can play Norman Bates except Anthony Perkins.

That's exactly who I was thinking of.

Edward Norton would be cool

Edward Norton would be good.

Johnny Depp or Kevin Spacey

reply

They're too old for the role, even back in 1998, it has to be a young & handsome 20 something, w/c is why they cast Perkins in the original.

I agree. There is only one Psycho, and therefore the only actor to play to role is Perkins.Period.End of Story.

So it's funny we just happened to be talking about this (by we, I mean me and Mother, of course...) In the book it was a fat old guy, AH wanted him to be initially really likable and wanted to make him young and cute... So going with that, I was thinking Toby Maguire... He just looks so innocent!

It takes 46 muscles to frown but only 4 to flip 'em the bird...

reply

Yeah, I see what you mean, plus he has that shy vulnerability going on too.

Vince Vaughn is too beefy in build and too pushy in personality -- he grandstands his dialogue like he's on the podium at a big meeting. Van Sant should have cast Edward Norton, who DOES appear to have that sort of nervous affability that Anthony Perkins was able to effect.

reply

Anthony Perkins became Norman Bates, I'm not saying he was the only one who could have played him, but now he is Norman Bates and anyone else is either a pale imitation or completely wrong for the role. You can't win.

That said, if I had to choose, maybe Crispin Glover.

reply

I think Cillian Murphy could pull it off.

reply

Maybe Crispin Glover, when he was the right age.

reply

That's exactly who I was thinking of or Edward Norton.
