a tad overrated
it is fun but not to be taken seriously. 6.5/10
shareyeah i never watched more than 20 minutes of this film without thinking it was gay and turning it off.
sharea tad? lol I first found it because people compared it to Tarantino. its lucky to be a 5 and only because Dafoe isn't particularly good just so wacky.
its unoriginal, uninspiring, and has poorly choreographed fight scenes. Tarantino masterfully uses time in his movie. this garbage was just "oh we found dead bodies! what happened!! (flashback to poorly choreographed action scene)
wow so masterful. you can do a flashback.
Yeah, it's an insult to this movie to compare it to some Tarantino overwork.
shareI won't say the maker was incapable. its certainly a film.
but it was unoriginal, uninspiring, had no creativity or real talent. I mean sure he put all the elements together.... but not particularly masterfully and all the elements themselves weren't particularly good.
I've never seen a more overrated film. compared to one of the great (Tarantino) but comes off as a polished B movie.
Honestly, it might very well be overrated but it doesn't mean it's bad.
It's been probably 15 years since I saw it last, so it's also likely I'm suffering from the haze of nostalgia (if I give it another watch, I'll get back to ya on that, haha), but I don't get the hate.
As for your claims of it being unoriginal and uninspiring... I'm just not sure what you mean. Maybe I haven't seen the right films, but I don't remember seeing anything quite like it before or since.
And even if the themes aren't 100% original... show me a film or book or anything that is. You'll have to go quite far in history for that.
Is it a masterpiece? No, lol.
But from what I remember, it's a fun, sometimes gruesome but always pretty engaging film.
I do wonder what makes Tarantino films (which I think are only compared to it because of the themes of revenge and violence) so much superior in your eyes that you can't stand them being compared to this one? Besides the luxuries a much higher budget provides, I guess.
im not saying its bad. its passable. a 5/10. just barely meets the threshold. its not original or new in anyway. and doesn't do anything particularly well or memorably... it gets a pass.
As for superior in Tarantino. his use of music (the intro to inglorious basterds). his use of flashbacks (Django unchained when it shows Django and broomhildas escape attempt to show why he hates the brittle brothers). tension building (the conversation in the basement bar in inglorious). the dialogue is massively superior. the sets are great.the character development. Dr king Shultz has more development in one finger than every single character in boondocks does.
I mean what isn't superior in a Tarantino film. its masterful homing and filming. boondocks is a subpar action movie..
boondocks is basically a gimmick.... It has a crime scene. then a flash back to show what happens with not particularly well choreographed or interesting fight.
I think the overrated comes from the fact it is constantly touted by its fans as "if you like Tarantino you will like boondocks!"
I don't think that it's that overrated. I would almost say underrated. It's only got a 22% on RT. Audiences though did like it (91%). It is certainly a product of its time, but I know when it came out it was certainly entertaining. I can't say that it's aged as well as it could have, but for what it was, when it came out, it was fun.
sharey'all crazy you just looking at it the wrong way
7/10
Its got a lot more depth than other vigilante / action films
4/10
One of the worst directed movies ever. Dafoe elevates it a bit but it is head-shaking bad. Dafoe's character is interesting and well done but somehow less ghay than the brothers. What was with the director? Make them lovers instead of brothers since you wrote/directed them that way anyhow.
This is a prime example of how NOT to do action. People standing out in the open, shooting in all directions at other people standing out in the open with the kinetic appeal of action-figure-play-time. It is a sign of a bad director and shows up in TV and movies like the plague.
I'd give it a 2.5 were it not for Dafoe.
