I watched 4 and a half seasons of this. I demand answers. Wtf is this about?

Lets get a few things out of the way first:
>"If you dont get it then you dont get it."
You dont need to post this, its not an answer. Apparently you dont get my question either.
>"Go back to watch Transformers."
Yawn, jump off a bridge.

Ok now that 80% of the replies can be omitted, ... what is this about?

1) I was hoping it would be about the mafia. But there's barely ever a mafia moment in this. We see them committing a few crimes sometimes, ok. Like probably-killing a waiter by throwing a rock. Or chasing a guy through the woods. And playing cards. But its always side topics. It actually makes me wonder how they make enough money at all to justify the illegality. Money is mentioned, and displayed, but we never see how its made. Actually even when it's displayed we just see a few hundred $ notes sometimes.

2) We still see mafia things more often than Tony's work in garbage disposal. We see that exactly 0 times. Zero. Zero times.

3) Initially it starts with Tony going to a therapist, but its not about that. By season 5 I think they said 4 years have passed. Who goes to therapy for 4 years with no real purpose at all? Therapy has a goal, you know? In the beginning thats his blackouts. What is it after that? For 4 years.

4) Its not really about the relationships of the people between each other because we barely find out anything about that. They're all the same anyway. Even when Tony gets skin cancer it is mentioned for about 2 minutes of screen time. Characters disappear for several episodes at a time as all of them are disposable. After watching 4 seasons I could at best remember the names of about 3 people outside of his actual biological family.

Maybe its about his annoying son? Or the annoying daughter? The annoying wife? Or the absolutely despicable priest?

In season 4, it's almost as if a plot finally emerged... but only almost. Actually nothing happens.
I skipped the 2nd half of season 5 and the entire season 6 and watched only the last episode and it consistently remained a snorefest about nothing all the way up until the very last second.

I think the clear answer here is that the show just isn't for you, which is fine, but the question for you is why did you watch so much of it? Clearly the entire world was in love with it after season 1--if you watched season 1 and weren't in love with it (quite the opposite, it seems), why did you bother to continue? You clearly weren't seeing it how others were, no worries, move on, don't watch another 50 hours of a show you don't like to then come complain about it on a message board.

If you honestly are looking to an answer to "what is this show about?" it's basically a character study of a man who happens to be a mobster and also a family man in therapy. And his family and associates. If you enjoy watching these characters, you'll enjoy the show; if you don't, you won't. You seem to fall into the latter. No biggie.

I have never felt the urge to watch this despite so many ppl telling me i would love it. To be honest i don't rate long running American TV series even the so called good ones i find they all follow the same formula regardless of subject the dialog and people all have a similar feel that i don't dig.

Breaking Bad was one of the few that i completed from start to finish i find they lure you in with a titillating set up with some hard sex and violence early doors but then as the episodes go on you find yourself zoning out and it's mainly filler with whatever the current politics they want to slip into to you on the side but you stick with it because once you started you want to see how it ends naturally but they take advantage of that and drag you along for series after series cock teasing you.

With the Soprano's i personally felt they made it because The Godfather and Goodfellas are two of the most popular films of all time so it was easy money but those films had World class writing the best Actors and best Directors so why would i want to see a B rate TV version staring people who were extras in those classic films

I've seen bits and pieces of this i want to like it but it makes me cringe seeing shit actors doing Goodfellas impressions with corny dialog

reply

If you're unwilling to put in the time to finish it in its entirety, you don't really have much point beyond it not being for you.

And yes, the kids are annoying, AJ more so, but he was meant to reflect what Tony disliked in himself

reply

Ant1238 gave a simple and direct answer and you ignored him...I'd also like to know why the hell you watched for so long if you weren't enjoying it!

reply

technically sir, I didnt ignore him, sometimes on moviechat we ponder about the response for a couple of years, if there is one. I read and accepted it!

reply

OK, point taken!

At the very heart, the show is about exploring the family dynamic, be it Tony's actual family* or his work "family"^🤷‍♂️

*Carm, AJ, Meadow, Uncle Jun &c.

^Silvio, Pauly, Big Puss &c.

Ever watch mob movies?
Ever watch a soap opera?

▶️This is a mob opera.◀️

If it's not for you, that's fine. The only mob movie I ever liked was The Godfather - the rest I've seen once if at all and don't watch them when they're on TV, but this had interesting characters in my opinion.

You should at least watch Donnie Brasco!

reply

Donnie Brasco is a good film. I watched it several times over the years.

Did you ever watch Casino? Thats my favorite mob film. The setting is a character in itself. And they describe the inner workings in narration for the first hour of the film as it progresses.

A short clip from Casino: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZN6mp2NjMhs

The dynamic between the fake and real him is interesting to me. Who is Tony? The one at home? The one in the mob? The one who talks to the therapist?

I always found it to be about how, no matter who you are, you're going through the same crap as anyone else. Here's this huge mafia kingpin who is having anxiety attacks, has weight issues, is trying to have a work/home balance, has a spendy wife, has mommy issues, and deals with two brats who don't appreciate him.

Tony's up there as the biggest anti-hero on TV with Vic Mackey and Walter White.

It's about getting you hooked enough to watch a few seasons. You were intrigued, were you not?

reply

Only while I was waiting for some real plot to start. I might go back and watch the last 2 seasons just out of boredom.

I'm afraid imo the best about the series was the intro song. Like I was waiting for things to happen, right? Lets say that story between the weird stupid girl and the FBI agent. The informant stuff. Nothing happened while I watched.

Or right away, the story about the priest flirting with Tony's wife - nothing happened.
Ummm the other Italian guy - nothing happened - even his exile is entirely offscreen.
Getting raped on the stairway? that sounds like a plot? - not in the sopranos
something about buying a house and noise molestation - wow that almost got close to becoming a plot, but it really shouldnt be one for a mob boss.
the mentally unstable student girl? - ... nope. not a plot. just a feint. just like the boyfriend there.

and so on and so on. all the way until the exact ending.

reply

You have a point, it's as aimless as was Mad Men. Their journey is entertaining and that's all. I never watched the last 3 episodes of the Sopranos.

reply

Damn, I just finished the series and am so disappointed the guy who raped her wasn't dealt with. Very frustrating.

I think the point of this show, like Game of Thrones, and all serialized multi-season TV dramas is to get you to watch the next episode.

It's a moneymaking gimmick to get high TV ratings and beat the competition. That's why shows like this go for so many seasons. Just to get you to keep watching.

That's why we have like 8+ seasons of Breaking Bad , and 12 seasons of Walking Dead. It's just giving people the same thing over and over again, once you get them hooked. I never watched Sopranos, I have no inclination to watch it. Sopranos is one of those '90s' shows that went on far too long, with too much praise. Just like The X-Files. There's another "90s" show that everyone talks up and praises to no end. I finally got around to watching it , and it was like rejected Twilight Zone episodes. Gimmicks at the end of the episode that went no where.

X-Files was designed to get people to watch the next episode. Which it succeeded at, and thus went for 11 seasons, and Sopranos just found another gimmick to exploit until people finally got sick of it.

Then, they do a big finale multi-part TV event, which all the critics go crazy about, saying it's the best Television we've ever seen in our entire lives. That's "the Sopranos". Over-hyped garbage from an over-hyped network (HBO).

reply

Breaking Bad only had 5 seasons you dumbass

reply

...okay, I don't care. I just made up a random number. I didn't even watch the show so I don't even give a shit how many seasons it did or didn't have. One season was too much. One episode was too much.

reply

How is the show bad if you never watched it? What a dumb fucking troll
