Not a good movie for math people
I love math and saw this movie hoping for the best. Unfortunately, this movie's plot is very unrealistic for the mathematical thinker.

shareI see where you are coming from. However, you've got to remember that this is just the way it is for any movie genre. I believe that most firefighters agree that Backdraft is extremely unrealistic, a majority of law enforcement shows and movies are unbelievably, even laughably unrealistic, and most war movies do not (and perhaps cannot) accurately, realistically portray the horrors of combat. I don't personally know any, but I would bet that most locomotive engineers would agree that Unstoppable was not realistic either. This doesn't mean that they are bad by any means. A lot of unrealistic shows and movies are excellent (Law and Order, Unstoppable, 24, etc). Portraying ultra realism would result in ultra boredom. Picture an accurate movie about a mathematician's academic life. It would probably be really boring. Even an ultra realistic movie about a federal agent would probably be extremely boring.
shareI watched this film in a postgraduate level math class. My professor mentioned that, for some reason, she had not seen the movie herself prior to showing it to us.
We chuckled throughout. I appreciate some of the film's artistic merits, but Pi's childlike perspective on mathematical principles will make anyone even moderately versed in mathematics laugh.

As a math major, I loved this movie. Then again, I didn't watch it for a lecture on math.

I'm well-educated in number theory, stats, and theoretical mathematics, and I found Pi to be an amazing flick. Especially considering its budget!
Different strokes. Some people are just so literally-minded (left-brained) and lacking in creativity that they can't suspend disbelief for the length of a full movie. Sucks to be you.
