this movie sucks!!

I've seen it and I find it really "unnecessary" and a very silly thing...yes, is a comedy, but what a waste of time!! and then, why catherine zeta-jones is ALWAYS so fakely impeccable (and not only in this movie...)?!?! I hate that pose...

I have to agree with you. I was very sleepy and kept dosing in an out. I dont feel the need to go back and watch it during day while wide awake.

I'm all for comedy, but its rather disappointing seeing George and even Catherine waste their time with something so juvenile as this.

I think knowing an attorney, especially a family law attorney, makes this movie a lot better. I do agree that this movie is not the Cohens best work, but then again I didn't like the Man Who Wasn't There. This movie does have a few great moments: Wheezy Joe, the Baron Von Espie court scene, and all the in court scenes. I dunno. I find that most films I don't like the first time I see them tend to grow on me upon subsequent viewings. I hated the Big Lebowski the first time I say it, and now I can't live without it.

This, like actually every Coen Bros movie I ever watched, is a movie that definitely grows on you with multiple viewings.

I saw it for the first time in an Amsterdam art house cinema at a midnight preview and ended up being the only person laughing at it. Maybe because the Dutch subs just could not keep up with the English puns. Everybody else was just murmuring on about how the Coens went commercial. My friend hated it, she didn't think it was funny at all.

Then I saw it with a colleague in a mainstream cinema where the audience came for the stars and not the directors, where more people thought it was funny, and I really began to appreciate the very sharp dialogues.

And then, about 4 months later I ended up watching it 7 times on a 23 hr flight from Sydney to Amsterdam (the rest of the movies offered just sucked). And still I laughed my ass off every single time at most scenes. The court scenes are just classic.

So what? you may think. You liked it on the first viewing.
True, but my friend didn't, remember?

She had caught that same 23 hour flight a week earlier and upon return admitted to also watching it 6 times, originally due to necessity. She ended up loving this movie and finding it very very funny.

So from experience I can safely say, watch it a few times, it really grows on you.

This is the worst movie i've ever seen, i am a fan of the coens and george clooney but this was pure poo, really awful. Zeta Jones has made one good film and that was Chicago.

i heard they backed up a pickup truck full of money to the coens door in order to get their name on this film. anyways thats the only reason i watched it. but yea disapointing , but i wouldnt consider it a coen brothers film. their last film (the man who wasnt there) was excellent and hopefully their next effort will be. but this one is bad it tries to be too smart for the audience and too many unnecessary and predictable plot twists.

Great, great comedy. Ignore all others, this movie rocks

It rocks indeed.

Before reading this thread, I never really realized how many ppl have an extraordinary perception of the terms ´quality´ and ´suck´. Shame on them...

Good script, great humor and acting of a level of quality that makes it look ´easy´. This movie is a gem! Coen Brothers or not, it´s been hugely underrated.

That's 125 minutes of my life that I'll never get back.

I like most of the actors and I wanted to like this movie, but I did not.

intolerably sucky!

haha, it's kinda scary when the blue people talk back.

this film was childish and predictable. no "sharp" dialogue at all, just poor slapstick gags and by-the-numbers acting. i really don't consider it Coen, out of principle.

reply

i actually liked this film, there was always a twist.

I missed this in theaters and I got to see it one day when I was home sick.

I was sad I missed it. This film is dark humor and those who like that sort of thing, which the Cohens are brilliant at, will find it funny.

Those that have never been married and gone though a bitter cash laden divorce will not find this funny. Those that don't find humor in marriages and divorces from gold diggers wont find it funny, either. Those that are aspiring gold diggers or divorce attorneys for gold diggers wont like it either. The Cohen's did what they do best - overblew every character and their quirks so you can see the ridiculousness of it all.

This movie is a dark humored look on pretty little gold diggers, and lawyer gold diggers who make money off of them. If you keep that in mind, you may get the film, and find the humor. If not - skip it.

We all go a little bit crazy sometimes.

My favorite "laugh out loud" moment was when Rex charged across the courtroom and attacked "the Baron". The other attorney shouted "Objection, your honor... strangling the witness!" The judge's reply: "I'll allow it."

I think this is clever humor, and if you enjoy movies like "Scary movie" or "american pie" so much, you can find this one boring, but is because you don't understand it. You're not going to tell me that the dialogs aren't great and fun... if you don't get them... what can I say?

Ah yes, the old "I enjoyed this movie, therefore you like crap" argument. Never fails!
Top it off with the classic "you didn't find it funny? *scoff*, you just don't get it" routine and you are on auto-pilot to internet cool!

Your patronising comments are so cliche. I love quirky, clever humour, but find tis film to be one unfunny mess. It's a shame because it had the potential to be a fabulously dark screwball comedy, but fails on just about every count, IMO.

The twisty bit where the CZJ character cons the Clooney character is the only time I managed to raise half a chuckle and it made me realise what a good film this could have been.

Clooney tried his best and came off fairly well. CZJ, however, is simply a charisma-free zone. I loved her in Chicago, she was fantastic in that part, but away from those all-singing, all-dancing roles, her star simply fails to shine. She and Clooney had zero chemistry.
