How underrated TP is baffles me

Seriously.
I mean I understand that the marketing for Treasure Planet wasn't the grandest, but I was expecting better ratings and such. I love this movie and Atlantis: The Lost Empire so much. Lots of depth, development, thought provoking feelings, etc. I personally dislike Disney, but I adore Treasure Planet/Atantis; two of the most underrated Disney films. Is it because these films lack stupid humor and wack ass CGI? I love how Treasure Planet actually carries a genuine ambiance, unlike so many other Disney films. Do people not appreciate that anymore? I guess it's just me, because I remember watching this when I was younger and still carrying good lessons from it. -shrugs-

but, oooh wait, what do I know? I'm just a 16-year-old girl, not a important critic!

Oh yeah, the other day I was adding Ron Clements as a like on my Facebook, and of all the films I saw being discussed on the wallposts, a girl was downing TP, it still blows me mind. What's wrong with Treasure Planet!?

I don't care, I love it.

I don't think this movie is underrated. It's just ok imo. It's right where it belongs.

I'm glad you like it though. When you can find something that serves as good escapism to you, I know how relaxing and enjoyable of an experience that is.

The real hard factor this film wasn't more successful is because people saw through the lack of creativity. It's actually a pretty entertaining film, but it's a B-movie premise given an A-quality gloss.

That is to say a sailing ship in space is something you see out of a Japanese fantasy film, where you kind of expect a ignorance about space (see "Message form Space" to see what I'm talking about).

But a US film? A Disney film no less? The same company that produced Tron, Black Hole and a couple other sci-fi films and documentaries about space? I think people were expecting something a little more sophisticated.

The upside is that it actually is a pretty good film. But I think it might have sold better had the 18th century sailing theme been replaced with pure sci-fi.

Oh please, many of those 'Japanese fantasy films' are much more sophisticated and mature than anything Disney's ever done. No one ever expects sophistication from a Disney movie. In facts, their movies are constantly made fun at for naive characters and silly concepts. (And also "Message from Space" was from 1978, of course its portrayal of space is incorrect)

The sailing spaceships are not the issue here, people already understand that the movie features a totally different universe with different styles and technologies. The reason for TP's failure as I see it is because of Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Atlantis sucks in every way. No character development, unfunny jokes, contradicting mythology, predictable plot. So of course when TP came out just a year after with a very similar style, people are going to ignore it.

I think it is over-rated. It remains my least favorite Disney animated film. I think it was ill-conceived from the start, a poor concept executed poorly. I just re-read the review I wrote of it almost 11 years ago.

A friend of mine actually was an animator that worked upon this film, and I went to see it hoping to like it even though the concept of adapting "Treasure Island" into a sci-fi motif worried me. What I was not expecting was to dislike almost everything in the production except some of the animation, and that I would elect it as my all-time least favorite Disney animated feature. I think it is obvious why most people wisely avoided this film (causing a rare write-down of profits by the studio).

Basically the film seemed to be pointless and rather boring. It sort of idles along and not much really ever happens. I felt myself squirming in my seat and pondering the dumb elements that simply don't work as I waited anxiously for the film to end. Using a tall-masted design for spaceships, where people can roam on the decks with no fear of breathing....having characters that are of different species becoming romantically involved...yuuch !

But then when it should have gotten better, towards the end, we are introduced to a Martin Short voiced character that is even more irritating and obnoxious than Jar Jar Binks. What in the world was the thinking behind the inclusion of this character ? A monster named Flatula that makes fart-like sounds ? Brilliant !

The sad thing is that the massive losses from releasing this over-priced production led to Disney killing all plans for 2D animation. Using 2D animation is not the problem here, it is the rather ill-advised concept and the awful script that was used.
I don't think I could bring myself to watch this again.

Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...

"Treasure Planet" is a fine film which unfortunately was under a lot of bad circumstances. First of all, it's release date was a misfire. Secondly, due to its appeal, it was in the same mold as the equally underrated "Atlantis", which wasn't well received. Therefore were people repulsed by it. Whether the film was marketed differently than "Atlantis" is subjective, but it's strange that "Lilo" was such a hit just five months priorly. But "Lilo" was the only Disney film in the early 00's which was a hit, both critically and commercially.

And it's truly a pity. While not a masterpiece, "Treasure Planet" truly deserved to do better on it's initial release. It's stuck with a bad reputation due to it's underperformance and due to the hand drawn/CGI debate. And that's bad.
