How underrated TP is baffles me

Seriously.
I mean I understand that the marketing for Treasure Planet wasn't the grandest, but I was expecting better ratings and such. I love this movie and Atlantis: The Lost Empire so much. Lots of depth, development, thought provoking feelings, etc. I personally dislike Disney, but I adore Treasure Planet/Atantis; two of the most underrated Disney films. Is it because these films lack stupid humor and wack ass CGI? I love how Treasure Planet actually carries a genuine ambiance, unlike so many other Disney films. Do people not appreciate that anymore? I guess it's just me, because I remember watching this when I was younger and still carrying good lessons from it. -shrugs-

but, oooh wait, what do I know? I'm just a 16-year-old girl, not a important critic!

Oh yeah, the other day I was adding Ron Clements as a like on my Facebook, and of all the films I saw being discussed on the wallposts, a girl was downing TP, it still blows me mind. What's wrong with Treasure Planet!?

I don't care, I love it.

One problem is that the story of Treasure Island, like A Christmas Carol, has become too well-known for any semi-faithful adaptation to seem fresh.

Also, I think people began to tire of the Disney formula. Everything from the misunderstood outcast to the celebrity-voiced comic relief. And while Jim and Silver's story was touching, the other characters didn't fare as well. For instance, I felt absolutely nothing when Arrow fell into the black hole.

Still, the more I watch Treasure Planet, the more I appreciate it. I believe future audiences will embrace it more, now that the Disney formula isn't being used quite as often.

I remember at the time it was said that the main reason the movie failed was because it was a stately, traditional animated film aimed at boys...and that boys at the time were more interested in flashy, hyperkinetic, supertrendy stuff. It just didn't appeal to its target audience.

Too bad. I saw it at a friend's urging...I'm not a fan of Disney animation, but I rather enjoyed it and think it deserved better. Hopefully it will find an audience through home video and TV.

Facts need to come before certainty.

Um... I don't think "stately" is the right word to describe TP. At all.

I watched this movie as a kid, along with both parts to Atlantis, and *beep* watching it now makes me shed a tear.

I actually just rewatched this movie today, and now I like it even more than I did as a kid. The main character is kind of bland, and the robot is kind of annoying, but the rest of the movie holds up pretty well. 

I just finally watched this movie and I am astounded at how good it is. Yes it wasn't as amazing as The lion King or the other Disney predecessors but it was very enjoyable to me. Jim Hawkins character and the predetermined social background they had on him was very refreshing in considering you never see a boy going through issues such as abandonment. Heck to me you hardly see such real life issues in animated movies anymore nowadays.

I remember the trailer for this movie played on one of my other Disney films back when it was going to be released on home video. I was seven years old but I promised myself one day I was going to watch that movie. The premise of space and how the film looked made me interested. Though I never did get around to watching it, every time I seen that trailer since then on that tape of mine I get reminded and wonder how it went and think soon I'll see it.

11 years later and I finally put down the time to watch it. And I am happy I did, although I generally didn't feel satisfied the same way I would from another Disney movie like Mulan or Hercules. I still felt very pleasantly surprised, first off I never watched or read any version of Treasure Island before. I only remember moments from Muppet treasure Island and I watched that once when I was too young to remember anything right. So the story I felt was slightly familiar since I generally knew the premises and it was predictable to me. The characters were great, I really liked the nerdy doctor and very strong captain and their banter with one another. What really pulled me in was the relationship between Jim and Silver. I was happy this wasn't another romance re hash but a different type of relationship that you don't see a lot in Disney. A type of Father/Son and Mentor/Mentee type of relationship. Although I agree the montage was hastily done and the movie felt like it was rushing it's plot. The way their characters bounced off from friendly to fighting to feeling hurt yet still in some way trying to be there for each other was very good and drew me in. He lets the bad guy get away, a refreshing change to me since they did try to kill each other.

I was very happy with the way things resolved and worked out. Of course Silver would line his pockets. Had me fooled thinking it's all gone. The end was adorable and I was particularly happy at the side characters' romance and the subtle way on you don't know really how Hawkins and silver's paternal relationships is going to be like or if they'll ever meet again and if they do are they going to meet on the opposite side of a blade? Or would one of them switch sides? I don't know cause I know hardly anything of treasure island other than that it's a island full of treasure. I enjoyed the film, not entirely perfectly satisfied but still pretty satisfied. Happy to see it with an adult's mind instead of a kid. I always wanted to do that, save a child hood Disney movie for the adult about a decade later. Happy I chose a movie as complicated as this one.

Hey, I just watched this movie for the first time at 28 years of age, going on 29, and I thought it was amazing. Really. I loved the character dynamics between John Silver and Jim. I loved the captain and the doctor. I loved the imagination that went into the character designs and world designs. About the only thing that dragged this down for me was BEN. Friggen' BEN. This movie's Jar Jar. He genuinely made me sneer at the screen. Other than him, this movie was great.
