WHY does nobody like this movie?

Honestly, I can't wrap my mind around the fact that I can only find about 2 other people who like this movie.

I'm one of those people who cry at everything (and by everything I mean legit everything, including jewelry commercials) and of course, I was bawling from the second the film started right up until the end. I absolutely love it.

I understand the sap-factor of the movie and that it is melodramatic at certain parts, but I feel like it's necessary! Is that the only reason people don't like it? Because I honestly don't think it was a poorly made movie in the least. The acting is great, the part is perfect for Williams, and I think the script is at least decent. The monologue on the cliff is amazing. If you don't like sappy movies, that's your problem, but that's the only reason I've gotten so far as to why people dislike Patch Adams, but almost everyone says they hate the movie.

Can someone please fill me in on reasons people don't like this?! It's a mystery to me, honestly.

I'm just casting my vote that's it's a craptastic movie.

Happy 2013 to all.

It's frankly sentimental and that is out of fashion. I like the movie.

It's really weird when you see a movie or remember a movie that you love and then come on IMDb to see what it scored just to see it get a low score on here and find out that there is a lot of hate toward said film. That is what happened with me and Patch Adams. I loved this movie when I first saw it probably 15 years ago and used to watch it all the time. I always thought it was so riveting and there are several parts that I remember from time to time and reflect on like his conversation with God after Corin dies, his relationship with that guy who was dying, Philip Seymour Hoffman's stuck up roommate who comes around to respecting Patch, etc.

I don't really care if the real guy hates the movie or not. I have heard and read very unflattering things about him over the years so I don't have much respect for him overall but I respect the caring and compassionate doctor that Williams portrayed in the movie.

Well if you know the real Patch Adams you would have alot of respect for him and how bad this movie is. The movie tries to simplify what the real Patch Adams has been doing, makes him look like a clown rather than a hard working doctor. He was a professional and treated his patients seriously, tailoring his work for each patient and treating them like a individual.

The Patch Adams in the movie jumps around the place, treats patients without a medical license, steals hospital supplies, has a fictional girl friend who gets murdered (in reality it was a man, Patch Adams friend who gets murdered, the movie can't even portray dead people correctly.. what a insult), the girlfriend is sheohorned in and portrayed as a stereotypical 90's female who is insecure but acts cold, bitter and strong willed with a passion for her work
that we've seen in almost every movie from the 90's.

The real Patch Adams hated this movie. By attempting to simplify what Patch Adams did they end up actually saying the opposite of what they intended, they intended for the movie to say that theres nothing wrong with getting emotionally invested in your patients, yet a doctor was murdered by a patient who also got attached.
The real Patch Adams theories are much better and smarter than this! Seriously look him up!

They portray the doctors of the hospital as inconsiderate, like talking about what treatment a patient will get right next to them, and don't even use their name... real doctors don't even do that. Its called bedside manner.

I found it to be average but thought it would have been better with someone else in the role. Williams isn't that good an actor and practically all of his characters seem to be the same person.
