80s fans be warned

For a guy who likes and have seen lots of 80s comedy this was awful. 16 Candles movie remade into 16 Pie Movie , a uncharming mess.

For a guy who's read a lot of IMDB postings, this was awful.

Why would you compare this movie to an 80's teen movie? Are you seriously demented or something?

-Art, Art blew a fart and blew the whole damn thing apart.-

reply

ok ok.

I grew up during the 80s and love the movies from that period, the music, the innovation and most of the fashion. I can clearly see how the most dissed decade is the most influental period on living in 2009.

when I discuss film with people who grew up during the 90s or 00s they seem to think -american pie- -knocked up- and other - ...... movies- are original ideas and the bomb.
when I say its all been done before and in my opinion better, they think Im retarded.
many also think todays clothes, mp3 walkmans, the rehashed 60s indie pop, electro house, breakbeats, credit card coke lifestyle, bad ass fake half dollar gangsta hip hop, pimped glam decoration and mullet/duran duran hairstyle is some new grandé idea when most of it is old ideas.

in my opinion most of 90-08 comedies are rehashed 80s comedies. for me this particular comedy -cant hardly wait- rubbed me the wrong way, I think it was a badly written uncharming mess and because it so obviously stole most of its ideas from 16 candles.

without disco, no tech house.

First of all, I wouldn't compare this to 16 Candles. It's not really anything alike other than there being a party and a secret love. So, as someone who's seen a lot of 80s movies and also this one (and liked all of the ones mentioned), I can say...stuff it. Seriously, no one said "Can't Hardly Wait is soooo original!" Even Sixteen Candles can be reminiscent of other older stories. All teen movies come down to Shakespeare's plays in a sense. So, you're not original with your idea of "they stole plot lines!" either.

you MUST be kidding.
this movie is better than all those 80s teen movies.
and definitely better than 16 Candles.
Of course you can't re-invent the wheel all over again but still, it cannot compare.
Although I should mention that the Breakfast Club is in a league of it's own.

I really don't think 80's teen movies and 90's teen movies are very comparable, really.

You cant compare 80's movies to 90's movies just like you cant compare 90's movies to 00's movies. I'm someone who grew up on 90's teen movies and I cant even think of any movie in the last decade that can compare to 90's movies. I also like alot of 80's movies but they're not the same to me because I didnt grow up with them. (OT: what would be considered a teen movie now? The only thing that I can think of is the High School Musical series, and movies like it, and that just makes me weep for the kids of the future.)

Please, 80's comedy wasn't all that great. I really enjoyed the Blues Brothers, Nat Lamp's Vacation, Animal House, Airplane, the Bill and Ted movies, the Breakfast Club, a Christmas Story, Spaceballs, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Uncle Buck. Those are the only 80's comedy films I think are worth mention. Crap like Porky's, Fast Times at Ridgemount High, Sixteen Candles, etc. aren't even worth the time. 90's comedy is equally bad as well. Stupid s hit like American Pie pretty much dominated the box office then. Dazed & Confused, Detroit Rock City, Clerks, Mallrats, the Stoned Age, Can't Hardly Wait, Wild America, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Airheads, Tommy Boy, and others like those are great examples of 90's comedy. Knocked Up/40 Year Old Virgin/Superbad/Role Models/Sex Drive/Step Brothers/Pineapple Express are pretty original flicks and are well deserving of praise. Unfortunately for these great films, they don't stand a fighting chance against stupid s hit like Superhero Movie, Meet the Spartans, Epic Movie, Date Movie, and Disaster Movie at the box office. I actually have to attend school with dumbasses who think random movie spoofs are funny, whether or not the spoof actually pertains to anything that happened in the movie.

In my opinion, this film is way better than most coming-of-age teen comedies released today.

Signatures are overrated.

reply

The hangover did better at the box office. I can't stand those idiot spoof movies either. spoofing scary movies was pretty good because scary movies are stupid to begin with but some of the crap they're putting out now is just retarded. nothing funny about any of it. just put some unknown actors and get 2 of the 6 writers from scary movie to work for a week and you got a low budget movie guaranteed to get idiots to go to the mall and watch it. I can't wait until they stop with it or at least put some effort into it. And death to reality tv too.

This movie was from the 50's, 60's, 70, and 80's. Meaning that teen movies from one decade influenced the teen movies of the next decade. And so and so on.

reply

I love high school movies and I don't care what decade it's from, if I like it I like it. But sure, they all follow the same path but that's what makes them a high school movie. When I put one of those on I know what I get.

reply

I watched plenty of 80's movies... born in 1964..... and I really enjoyed Can't Hardly Wait.Fast Times it wasn't but heck what was ?

reply

Fast Times is depressing.

Statutory rape, Premature ejaculation, abortion, and betrayal.

I have seen it maybe 3 times, and every time, I just don't get it. As a drama, I can get it, but as a comedy, not so much. A few moments are awkwardly funny, and Penn's character nearly carries the comedic portions of the film, but I don't see why it is on this pedestal.

I can see how the ending is comparable due to the updates on the characters, but I think Can't Hardly Wait is very funny. Maybe not completely "realistic" as I heard some people comment, but hilarious and not dark and depressing like Fast Times was.

Every time Stacey loses her virginity for the first time like that, I get so angry. I'm angry at her slutty friend for encouraging her, and I am mad at this guy for *beep* a girl who works at the mall, obviously she is in high school if she is working at the mall in the 80s. And I am mad at her parents for having no clue what their daughter is doing. And then it angers me further that she is an idiot again and gets pregnant and gets an abortion. Were teens this stupid in the 80s? No condoms, ever?
To me it's depressing like The Virgin Suicides was. Wake up used on a football field type of depressing. Man, being a teenage girl can really blow... when you are trying to please men with your vagina every second you can get.

Can't Hardly Waits didn't have girls being taken advantage of at every possible turn. Most of the girls shown seemed to have complete control over their sexual encounters and blew off men often, as they should. And they had condoms... a pleasure pack full of them.

If I had to be a character in either movie, I would be in Can't Hardly Wait, because that is a fun party with fun people. If I were in Fast Times, I'd either be sucking off a carrot in public next to where I work, or getting an abortion. No strong female characters. Sexist crap. But sure, I can see how a man would enjoy Fast Times.... seemingly underage titties. Classsy.

reply

"Were teens this stupid in the 80s? No condoms, ever?"

In a word, yes.

Fast Times is pre-AIDS scare, at a time when sex education was still debated even in the most liberal school districts. You couldn't even say the word condom on TV. Parents didn't take proactive steps to protect their kids by getting them birth control. That movie takes place in another era, which is why it may seem foreign to you.

Fast Times was a dark comedy for a dark era, I wouldn't even compare it to 16 Candles or Pretty in Pink. It's almost a cry for help and a wake up call to the parents of that generation. But it also spoke to the kids of that era. They knew what was going on in schools, stuff their parents knew nothing about. Cameron Crowe went undercover to write that article about what was actually happening back then.

I like Can't Hardly Wait, but it is a sanitized film. It has a few "edgy" moments, but knows how to walk a line.

I will also say, in regards to Stacey....yes, I knew girls who if an older guy paid them a sliver of attention would go weak in the knees. But she is a freshman in the movie. How is she different than Amanda Beckett, who as a freshman allowed the jock of the school to pick her out and make her relevant....and it took her four years to realize it was pointless? Stacey is not too smart, but maybe by the time she is a senior, she smartens up (actually sooner, if she remains with a Preston-like guy like Ratner). Amanda realizes after four years her whole relationship was a big sham. And only after she gets dumped. I don't think that makes her any stronger or smarter than Stacey.
