What a BRAT!

Everytime she wanted something and didnt get it she threw a tantrum....then they give in....what the hell....yeah that's great parenting!! Retarted or not you do not give into everything kids want..I really hate the message this sends...

I love a friend who let's me call them f*%kface! :)

This gives people who are mentally disabled a bad name and being in that condition doesn't give her the right to act like that. It's understandable that she was frustrated at her mother, but she could have handled it much better. My brother who has Down Syndrome is 26 and he doesn't throw tantrums like that. I can't compare one to the other but I want to say that I haven't met a single person with mental disabilities act like that. I don't know where they got their research from, but she over dramatizes her role.

When you have to shoot, shoot, don't talk

Well, it is a movie!!

Okay, two things, someone above me mentioned that her outbursts cant be helped and mentally she is not 22-25, then really, she shouldnt be living on her own or getting married. Two, lets just be honest here, all three girls had their little bratty "my parents have given me everything I have ever wanted so I can behave how I want" moments. but, as brittney above me said, it is just a movie

reply

Have you ever met anybody with autism that acts like that? No? Well, until you have (I'd see the Australian film The Black Balloon just to get some knowledge) please don't be bringing up your brother with Down's Syndrome in a discussion about this film. Carla was mentally challenged and autistic, and that's why she acted the way she did.

I think that too many people look at films like Temple Grandin and think that people with autism are all that high functioning, when the truth is actually most likely closer to reality for a lot more people with autism based on this film and the Australian film I've mentioned above.

reply

When did they EVER say that this girl has autism?

reply

To be honest, I don't ever recall her throwing a tantrum because she didn't get what she wanted. I can recall her throwing a tantrum because some kids were making fun of her at school and when Daniel unintentionally humiliated her.

I am watching a scene right now where she is doing exactly that. It's the scene at her sister's wedding reception, she says she wants to marry Danny and her mother says that she is blind because she thinks she is in love. Granted her mother is annoying and patronizing sometimes, but the way Carla just HAS to discuss that in the middle of the reception, I mean, come on! It's like someone else said here, one moment she is like a child who is upset and screams when she doesn't get what she wants, the other she is grown-up and independent enough to live by herself, work, etc? I understand the "message" of the movie but maybe they shouldn't have made Carla seem so unlikable and inconsiderate of other people's feelings, like her sister's. When it came to HERSELF she was very sensitive, but everybody else's feelings just didn't matter? Couldn't she understand that she could discuss it later with her parents? Why was she hurt when Daniel said those awful things in front of everybody but then she doesn't care that she is making a scene at her sister's wedding?

Look at this signature. Good. Now you'll remember me.

One COULD call the mom a brat, too.

Carla is smiling the day after her 1st night of Sex.. How can one smile about having sex to blasting ("76 Trombone's) band Music?

On the brat end... the part that gets me every time, is how she acts at that Sutter Hills pet adoption thing. Carla's Mother brought her there to hopefully help her get a job in the field Carla chose. Carla's Mom tells her to be quiet, but she shakes her head like so what, and keeps being disruptive. Yes, that would piss me off, because she is showing she can control herself, but is choosing not to, and ruined the entire thing. Carla wants to work in a field that she doesn't show that she can be trusted with animals. All it takes is for one slip up, and something very dangerous or bad could happen. Carla should just stick to her fish.

Re:marching band..."76 trombones"...How about at the same time at another part of Disney, Heath Ledger serenading Julia Stiles in "10 Things I Hate About You", with a marching band playing "Can't Take my Eyes off of You"? Very well timed, the usual of the seesaw stinger by the band (the part before the "I love you baby"
chorus in 10TIHaY./)

When she got upset @the wedding part I laughed..no, all of us in 1999 in that theatre I go to LAUGHED It was FUNNY seeing Juliette Lewis as Carla Tatestart crying at Giovanni(sp?) Ribisi as Danny saying drunk "We DID it" (then sings Meredith Willson's "76 Trombones" from the "Music Man") then when "Silent Night"'s playing..to emphasise the "pathos" of the situation (outside by the Tate family car or lim)o ..and then family drives off, leaving Danny by the party, IT WAS HYSTERICAL and HILARIOUS (even the ushers heard this, the loudest noise, came in and also laughed on that day in 1999 at the theatre at the "retards" in a fight!) FUNNY! And I BOOED when they wed come the end.,

Happy Turkey day (gobble gobble).
