Is this still the worst Star Wars movie?
Or are Last Jedi, Solo, and Rise of Skywalker worse?
shareThis is no longer the worst Star Wars movie, Solo, TFA, TROS, and TLJ are worse.
shareNope, not by a long shot. Even when all we had were the first 6 films, this was not the worst of them. However, TLJ has officially been dubbed the absolute worst Star Wars film of all time, so much so that some fans are disowning it entirely.
shareThe Phantom Menace it the most boring, Solo the most inane. I remember one or two bright moments in this one, at least.
The recent trilogy are better than this thing.
Rogue One bored me way more than Phantom Menace. On the other hand, Rogue One never saw fit to have an infuriating, bumbling moron drool his way through half the movie, so...
sharePrefer the ST to this and TPM, still say AOTC is the worst
shareNo, "The Phantom Menace" is far worse! I actually enjoy "Attack of the Clones" a lot, when I'm in the right mood.
I need to see "The Rise of Skywalker" a few more times before I can form a really solid opinion about how bad it is. I was stifling giggles and thoroughly enjoying myself when I saw it in the theater, so I can't really judge as yet.
I agree. I never have fully understood the hate that AOTC gets. It's imperfect, yes, but I greatly prefer it to The Phantom Menace.
TPM had its moments but it gets dragged down by some really sub-par elements, including a story that doesn't make a ton of sense and silly shit like Jar-Jar Binks.
AOTC has some interesting ideas behind the story that I don't think are immediately apparent to many viewers.
Neither TPM nor AOTC are even half the movie that ROTS is. But then again, I think ROTS is probably the best movie in the entire canon.
"I think ROTS is probably the best movie in the entire canon."
Can't agree with you there, not while "The Empire Strikes Back" exist, because "TESB" is perfect from beginning to end and the prequels are all deeply, deeply, flawed.
The thing about the prequels is they contain fabulous stuff, which is mostly overshadowed by horrible stuff. I mean they're three movies about this unlikeable young dolt who's played by two terrible actors, but there's also the brilliantly written rise of Palpatine, and McDiarmuid's wonderful performance. Before this, I've said that watching the prequels is like digging gold nuggets out of a dungheap, because there's some really awesome stuff in the prequels between the godawful scenes. The best thing I can say about "RotS" is that it's the one film in the prequels that offers more gold than manure.
TESB is a great movie but I think it drags in the middle, especially when they're running around Cloud City. I get bored.
Re: Anakin, I never did come around to Jake Lloyd (though I do feel bad for the actor), but I eventually got Stockholm Syndromed into liking Hayden Christensen. His performances in those films may not have been great, but he still has a quality that I eventually came to appreciate.
"...but I eventually got Stockholm Syndromed into liking Hayden Christensen"
If you'd said he was actually good we'd have an argument, but yeah, "Stockholm Syndrome" is as good a way to explain my feelings about the prequels as any.
I do feel bad for Christiansen and Jake Lloyd, and any other young actor who makes a film with George Lucas, because Lucas is know to be "The Worst Actor's Director Alive". He doesn't direct his actors at all, he just lets them do whatever they want, and IMHO the only reason the OT is so good is because the young actors were so perfectly cast. Of course some actors are fine with being ignored by the director, old pros like Alec Guiness and Ian McDiarmuid don't need to be told what to do, neither did someone as well-trained and experienced as Ewan McGregor, even if he was young. But Christiansen and Lloyd's careers went down the tubes after the prequels, I hope Lucas feels guilty about that because that's largely his fault.
I know Jake Lloyd was bullied and harassed as a kid because of TPM and that's very unfortunate. You'd think that kids would ultimately just be impressed that he starred in a Star Wars movie. And yes, his career was over before it really started.
Christensen was able to do a little better. He has at least continued to work and Jumper was a legitimate financial success.
If you want to see an interesting movie with Hayden, go find the 2003 film Shattered Glass. It's based on a true story. Here's a trailer:

I dislike the prequels, sequels, and spinoffs so much that I don't consider them Star Wars movies at all and they ain't in my headcanon.
If I was ranking them, though, I think The Force Awakens was fun and inoffensive, so it goes up to the top.
Least favourite is hard to choose...I might give it to Phantom Menace, though.

I think TFA is VERY offensive, and I want to see it turned into a Kelvin Timeline-type throwaway movie like those insipid Abrams Trek movies are.
Yes, it is clearly the worst for me. Followed not far behind by episode 1. "Revenge of the Sith" is the better one in this prequel trilogy, I think.
shareRevenge of the Sith is the least worst, yeah. I remember a friend of mine describing the Darth Vader moment at the end and saying that it was actually all done perfectly...and then he [Lucas] ruined it... Didn't know what he meant until I saw the film. Vader's first breath is portentous and chilling. Almost made me forget what a train-wreck his origin story had become (basically three movies of whining, childish behaviour followed by being duped into joining the Dark Side to save Padme, instead of doing it to claim power). Of course, then came, "NOOOOoooooooOOOOO!" and I swear to you I laughed aloud.
shareYou are very right about that (all of it). And that "Noooooooooo!!!" was cringy as hell for me. I must have made a face kind of like :-/
shareI think the "Noooo!" that was added later to Return of the Jedi was the first time I started seriously considering that George Lucas was a) aware of fan criticism of his changes and b) wanted to slap his fans. I suspected it with the quasi-fourth wall break where Jar-Jar looks right into the camera during Episode III as if George meant to say, "Yeah, I reduced his part, but you guys are whiners, so I didn't take him out entirely. Nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah." But I dismissed it. Then he added "Noooo!" to RotJ and I thought, "Well, shucks..."
shareIt really wouldn't be surprising if it was indeed the case. What you noticed make a lot of sense.
shareDon't get me wrong, George Lucas will always be a brilliant filmmaker who made one of the biggest pop culture phenomenons of all-time, but I think he might have wanted some small revenges on a fanbase who he perceives as having fired shots first.
shareNot even close unless we're not counting any of the Di$ney Wars fanfiction schlock. All of which are far worse.
