It’s surely very realistic.
The first 20 minutes gave us all a very frightening view of what a heavily armed beach landing under heavy fire must have looked like, that was very scary stuff. A lot of those G.I.s didn’t even make it off the landing craft to take a shot.
My Wife’s father did a tour in Vietnam in 1968. He said Platoon was fairly accurate, our boys all had very good binoculars, well trained police dogs and really skilled scouts and those VC bastards would just start shooting from every direction anyway, they’d just sneak up on you! Pop-Dukes told me that our American boys couldn’t see a damn thing in those thick jungles over there. It’s wasn’t like a regular American boy deer hunt where you can learn the patterns in the forest and follow a trail, that jungle was thick and you could lose your way and get all turned around real easily.
My wife’s Brother did two tours in Iraq, he’s a US Marine, he’s tough as nails.
He attacked the city of Fallujah and went house to house throwing grenades and firing his rifle.
He was injured in combat but declined The Purple Heart Badge. He called it the ‘Enemy Marksmanship Badge’ and would not wear it on his uniform. The U.S. Marines are tough sons of guns!
We got really good and drunk one night in my garage and he told me he killed a few guys during his first tour but he didn’t give me too many details and I sure didn’t press him. He thinks The Hurt Locker is an excellent, realistic war picture. The Marines and U.S. Army had to deal with a lot of high explosive booby traps over there in Iraq. My bro killed a few guys with his rifle and he won’t talk about that so much but he says the explosive booby traps were the scariest part of it all.
