Was Tim Story the wrong person to direct these movies?

Tim Story kind of strikes me as a hack instead of somebody who is a genuine auteur or somebody who is truly passionate about the source material. Jessica Alba would later tell a story (no pun intended) about how Story criticized the way that she cried on screen because she didn't look "pretty enough".

Obviously. Based on his resume, Story is not someone who’s hired to do any source material justice.

I wouldn’t put the blame on him entirely (his alleged ahole criticism of Alba on the other hand...) given the bad script, though. But Fox messed up with these movies from the get-go.

With Marvel and Avi Arad bringing nearly every big superhero they have to the big screen since X-Men in 2000, Arad saw dollar signs in The Fantastic Four. Having spent most of the 1990s failing to get them to theatres, and even producing and filming a full move that was never intended for release to retain the rights, following the massive success of the first Spider-Man movie, every studio wanted their own superhero property and Arad was happy to shell them out to whoever bid the most.

Unfortunately, they decided to bring the movie to Fox, a studio famous for ruining movies by having them run far too short to fit more showings in. Then Arad then decided to bring Tim Story in to direct it, based on his previous effort Barbershop. I’m not sure how Arad managed to see that Story would be perfect for a cosmic adventure story by viewing a clichéd Ice Cube movie, but Story was somehow hired, despite respected and decent director Chris Columbus lobbying for the part for years. Every interview I read with Story seemed to give me the impression he was a complete cretin who was in way over his head… Between this and how rushed the whole damn thing was, I made it a point not to get too excited for the film, as it reeked of typical summer blockbuster fluff that you forget about the moment you leave the theatre. Everything about pre-production screamed “rush job” as Fox, as they nearly always did at the time, didn’t release the best film they could, they released whatever they could in time for a certain release date.

Nope. These movies are awesome. And crying pretty is important. This aren't deep films, we can't be getting all sappy.

You're an idiot. how do you feed yourself?

Clearly. He was better known as a comedy director. And I liked Barbershop. But it should had been someone like Brad Bird.
