Why is it called "Eyes Wide Shut"?

What do you think the title is in significance too, thanks.

reply

The original story is also called "Dream Story". Eyes wide shut relate to a sense of dreaming.

The movie is very exhibitionist and provoking, so it is ironic to have one's eyes shut towards that.

I thought to some extent it referenced the theme of indifference as demonstrated by certain characters in certain scenes.

reply

Right, I agree with that. They neglected Helena in the toy store at the end.

to me it's like pretending to know everything, but really knowing nothing at all. or, consciously keeping your eyes shut as to avoid something you're not supposed to see. tom cruise's character does both of these things

Also, the fact that, paradoxically, we often see things more truthfully, clearly, and honestly in dreams than we do in "reality" when we are awake. Much like the paradox that people often act closer to their true selves when behind a mask (or on the internet) then they do with their true face.

I don't know that the main character is "consciously keeping [his] eyes shut as to avoid something [he's] not supposed to see." My thought, feeling, is that the main character is living in a world where nothing is as it seems and his eyes are being opened. That this is a world we all live in. Where we go about our lives and at some point think we have an understanding of what's what -- only to occasionally experience the shock that things are completely different.

In Bills case it was personal, the revelation began with his wife and was augmented by serveral discoveries while on a night out (something he had never indulged in previously one would suspect).

The final verdict is what Bill and his wife will make of this discovery. For his wife had her discovery long ago. Before her epiphany, she probably never imagined that she would forfeit her husband and daughter for a fling. Now she knows.

Because Bill and Alice are going to have to pretend they don’t know what they have discovered about the world, each other, and themselves, to keep their marriage and their deluxe New York lifestyle in tact.

reply

There are two ways you can close your eyes - tight or wide.

elites doing crazy things and it is right there in front of us but since we dont have actual videos or footage we dont really believe it is happening; so it is there in front of us (eyes are wide open) but we dont see it because its hard to believe and dont have videos or photos (therefore eyes are wide shut) , we know its there but we cant actually see it

The title sounds like a clever paradox. Eyes Wide Open becomes Eyes Wide Shut, but I’ve come to believe that it refers to Bill and Alice having their eyes opened and then choosing to shut them for the sake of their marriage, and perhaps their sanity after learning about elite sex rituals involving murder.

So the title means their Eyes are Wide and then they’re Shut.
