Average and overrated. My review

I've long held off watching this movie for some reason or the other but recently just decided to go through with it in a flow.

The plot is very simplistic, almost childish really - Banderas is someone who gets into trouble with the Royals for his deviant behavior and gets exiled to some place where he gets tasked with Vikings to defeat some perceived monsters and they set off and do it.

The whole thing is never properly explained as to why and what. The selection process is also a mystery. Why 13? Why was this guy chosen while others volunteered? (because the witch said it has to be an outsider, but why?).
It's just a setup to get the plot moving.

The vikings are shown as neanderthalic almost and barbaric/uncivilized compared to the Muslims with their crude customs and behavior and lack of empathy when their kin die. Not sure what is being conveyed here really.

Additionally, it made no sense how he picks up their language so fast but in their defense, time passage isn't shown. So we don't know how long he was with them so it is conceivable he picked up some language here and there being a poet and all. Still, it was cheesy.

The fight with the monsters (humans really) was moronic as well as there was no backstory as to why they existed, why they had a quarrel with this "kingdom" of a small open castle.
It appeared that both groups live within a few miles of each other and it also appeared that they've lived nearby for a long time.
So why did they decide to attack only now? And what was their reason to not finish off the humans when they had the chance but turned back.

Overall, the movie was quite lame with simple, childish dialogs but never escalates to the cult status that Arnold built around similar movies to this viz. his Conans and Red Sonja movie.

The acting was good though as all characters put great efforts into it. The head Viking was good and I recall seeing him recently in a movie. Ironclad. And he was quite good in it as well. Shame he didn't get more roles.

Banderas was annoying in reality and didn't really do much.

Overall, not a very good movie nor a bad movie as well. Average.

Rating: 5/10

That was a well written review.

My fave character is Buliwyf too.
Vladimir Kulich is very good in similar roles like Ironclad.

He was recently in Vikings but they killed him off.

I don't know why Vladimir don't get more roles but I suspect he has wrong people working with him that handle him like a property. Just the webmaster at his site is terribly protective and behaviour is very strange to the fans. That scares fans of so why not producers directors etc.

I didn't want to visit his site anymore with that kind of behaviour from people around him.

It's a shame really I think he would have landed more better roles without that contact network he has. They are always all over him and when he "lands" a role they start to act like he is the only actor in the world and (if you know what I mean)

You never hire a fan to do your official website.

Vladimir should change his whole crew!

13 because that's how many months there are in a Viking year. It's clearly said in the movie.
Why? Because it's clearly their tradition? What, you want them to tell you a backstory on how this came to be or what?

And that is how the Vikings were, death for them was just another thing and dying in battle was considered to be the best thing in life. They were barbaric, especially compared to Arabs who at the time were some of the most advanced people on the planet.

Why do you need a backstory about the "monsters" and why does a little mystery make it moronic? They are pretty clearly a crazy nomadic cult(in the novel they're a tribe of neanderthals). Do you want everything explained to you? And what battle are you referring to exactly? There's a whole bunch of them.

And yeah, this is a cult classic, much more so than the 2nd Conan and the atrocious Red Sonja.

Overall, an awful review.

OP,
I'll bet that a great many things about life confuse you.

I was going to respond to OP but you pretty much nailed it.

Especially the reduction of plot part.

You seem to be easily amused by movies. Your childish replies only further the fact that maybe you should be on Twilight board or somewhere else like a cartoon movie board.

1. Eban is a noble from a noble family, and get in trouble for fall in love with a woman who belong to another man, and the jealous husband poisoned the mind of the caliph to send him very far away as a ambassador to the land of the Tossuk Vlad, the plot is about a young man who has a simple and easy life to become a worthy server of God and how he grows to be a man, facing a terrible enemy.

2. The whole thing is properly explained as when Eban reach destination the king of the Tossuk Vlad has died and He and Melshisidek are actually in his funeral and a new king has to be selected, then a brother of Buliwyf attempts to kill him only to find his own death; Melshisidek character is the plot narrator and actually explain everthing needed at the time Eban has to depart. Also He explain why 13 must have to go to aid the old king Hrothgar, as the Oracle predicts the future; its obvious that the Oracle has no magic, but the Tossuk Vlad thinks she does, and go to war convinced they are going to win, among other religious beliefs and war tactics.

3. The north mens are called barbarians by the romans, as it means those who speak like beasts; they was the must feared enemies of ancient and medieval world, great sailors, ruthless warriors and the ability to understand the world as no one have never before did; life and death was part of everyday situation, but death in battle was the supreme gift for them and their family, as warriors will live forever in the Valhalla.

4. One of the most amazing things in the movie is how Eban with patiente and pesistence learned how to comunicate with them, but is more to show how Buliwif is brutal as smart as He learned not only how to speak arab, He also learned how to write in arabic, when Eban writes "La ilaha illaallah muhammed rasullulah" (speak what i draw)

5. The Wendols are a ancient terror and they was very far to the north, and is explained how the treath of their existance grew; they also has their war rituals and as they believe tey are beasts they behave like that.

6. Conan is a sword & sorcery genre and The 13th warrior is not.

The OP looks like a teenager who needs a lot of help "bring me my armor"

To stalingradiii

It seems English may not be your first language but you did an outstanding job in explaining the movie to the OP. Thank you.

Why are you reviewing a movie you haven't watched?

reply

Average, maybe. Overrated, not by a mile.

It's an action film. It should be common sense going in to suspend disbelief and lower your expectations.

Your other questions are also obviously because you weren't paying too much attention. But then, it'd be difficult for anyone to watch The 13th Warrior if they're sitting on a high horse.

reply

Overrated?

Take it easy man... It is 6.5/10 on imdb somehow.
