Although given how the scenes where Smith tried to stage something more complicated turned out, maybe that's for the best.

It’s not in Inception territory but yeah, the exposition is a bit overwhelming in a few places. Rickman banging on about the plot in the Mexican restaurant, and Ben and Matt arguing about the mechanics of getting back into heaven in the parking lot.

All that talk and I’m still not 100% on what’s going on half the time.

Well , most people dont know the intricacies if Catholic Dogma , and the movie's theoretical add ons to it , so it needs a fair bit of explaining I guess

and then I learned that "Metatron" is the voice of god , and not a power ranger.
and on googling this to make sure, I found that thats just one of a variety of hats that angel wears.
