Purchase guns? I guess it's left to our imagination, but when you purchase a firearm they take a LOT of information and back it up with a very detailed background check. How could any of that be provided for the angels.

Yeah, legally you do. It's not unbelievable that a) they'd have IDs and anything else needed that they'd obtained illegally or b) the guy selling them the guns didn't seem super bright since they were talking about killing and he's just more interested in making money than following the law.
