Versus A Bug's Life

Antz is better.

reply

Antz was daring, had a better story, more original characters, better script, and was more for kids AND adults with its political themes.

A Bug's Life was just a cutesy ripoff of Seven Samurai.

I prefer Antz b/c when I saw it I understood it more. Even though I was like six at the time.

I didn't like either of these movies much as a kid in theaters (not an insect fan... ew). If I had to pick at the time, I'd definitely pick "A Bug's Life," though it and "Cars" are my least favorite Pixar movies (the rest, however, are among my favorite movies in history).

Watching them both on DVD now that I've grown up, as a Pixar fan, I hate to say it, but... "Antz" was a better movie. More subtext with the communism vs. individualism, more complex characters, more "adult"... which is probably why although (adult) critics liked "Antz" better on rottentomatoes.com, "A Bug's Life" blew it up at the box office (more kid appeal).

IMO ANTZ is way more superior to The Bug's Life in every way!

reply

Agreed.
As a kid, I like A Bug's Life more, just because it was more cutesy and I didn't understand some of the more mature humor in Antz. I watched both again recently and I was really surprised by how much more I liked Antz.

I saw Antz first and I loved it, then all I heard was everyone raving about this Bug's Life movie, so I checked it out, and I hated it. I remember being so annoyed that everyone like A Bug's Life when Antz was so much better.

A Bug's Life was a lot more interesting. I can't even remember Antz, I just know I watched it. What really hurt Antz was the fact that it was marketed wrong. It was pitched as a kid's movie when in fact, that's not at all what it is. By doing this, Hollywood hurt the movie's chance at being something more than just "for kids". I even remember seeing ads for it on TV, all the commercials were comparing it to A Bug's Life, saying it's just as exciting and making it seem like a great movie to take the family to see. In reality, it was more of an adult movie than a kid movie but the producers didn't take this into consideration.

Disagree.
I hate Antz. It's boring, unfunny, and creepy looking.
Pixar dominates this by far.

When I was little, i remember waiting for A Bug's Life to come out on VHS.
In the meantime, I had this to watch. I absolutely HATED it.
Yes, I know it's for a more.. 'mature' audience, but hey, kids will watch anything and like it. (At least, I did. I love Beetlejuice and Rocky Horror- so this is no exception.)
I re-watched this again last week, and I hated it as much now as I did when I was younger.
It's just.... BAD! None of the characters were interesting either.

Well, I havent seen A Bugs Life since I was a child, but I remember it as slightly better. I liked Antz for its animation and the story, but i never understood it completely until some years ago.

I was 9 when both movies came out. While both were good movies, I'd have to say I liked Antz better. That's just my opinion, though.

Well, it's kind of hard to place which down on my opinion of which one is better. Antz gives us a very good story. Kind of psychological in a way. Bug's Life is one of my favourite movies that Pixar has ever made, breaking new ground on computer generated animation and giving us a new world to look at from our perspective down to an Ants perspective. So, generally my opinion would be hard draw to which one is better and I think that Bug's Life set it's execution better than Antz did, and Antz had a bit more detailed a story (and there was also a little innuendo in there, if you pay attention).
So, I'd have to say: "Antz". Two of my favourite animated movies still, but Antz just fascinated me a bit more in it's basic story and the character Z as he wants to feel significant and proud in his Ant Colony. It's actually a pretty detailed story, as well as a detailed world (Not to the magnitude of Bug's Life's, but still).

The signature is truly mightier than the name!
