Antz is better.

I agree, i remember watching Antz first and i loved it. Then i remember watching A Bug's Life and i starting crying because i hated it, so i watched Antz again. Haha, i guess i was probably 6 years old at the time... Man, those were the days.

(Just copied this over from a post I made on the Bug's Life forum.)

I've always preferred ANTZ as well but I know I am in a minority in saying that and can understand why. Apart from the fact they came out virtually at the same time and are both primarily about ants they are very different films really. I think A Bug's Life is a bit more mainstream and targetted at younger audiences but with enough nice puns and visual flair to keep the adults entertained. ANTZ is a more mature and slightly darker tale and might even be an adult film in disguise? Also A Bug's Life is a bit more of a familiar storyline whereas it's a bit more difficult to see where the story arc is going with ANTZ which may sub-consiously annoy some viewers.
I definately liked the character designs in ANTZ more, a little bit more intriguing and edgey whereas PIXAR went towards the usual friendly and cute-sy looks. The exterior environments are pretty similar (big leafy plants and stalks, clumpy dirt, rusty tin cans and such) but I definately liked the ant colony of ANTZ compared to the under-designed aesthetics of the Bug's Life hive. (The grasshopper's (mexican?) bar was a bit closer to what they were doing n ANTZ I will admit.) I preferred the music in ANTZ as well, the bouncy motifs suited the busy hive activity of ants and the rest of the score was very "lounge-y" which suits my personal tastes, compared to the Lassetter go-to guy Randy Newman whose music always ends up making my eyes roll.
So to each their own, but I personally find myself pulled more in favour towards the creative decisions that the Dreamworks artists arrived at than the PIXAR guys and preferred the less-predictable storyline that ANTZ told.
Not essential to enjoying the films but another thing I recall is it was one of the very few times PIXAR was beaten in the technology stakes; the water fx displayed in ANTZ by PDI were far superior to the liquids in A Bug's Life - at least I thought so at the time.

I couldn't agree more, I was young when i first saw antz but still it was like a gritty war movie just animated and about antz. A bugs life was verry mutch a feel good family film. Antz tho was way more adult

Bug's Life was funnier I thought, but Gene Hackman was quite sinister as General Mandible.

A Bug's Life sucked; I thought so when I was like 10 and first saw it. I saw Antz afterwords and was immediately impressed. Antz is way better, and in my opinion, way underrated in the world of animation.

I hated A Bug's Life at first but I really like it now...I'd say I like them both equally but in different ways. Antz is more witty and A Bug's Life is more a family film.

I was totally blown away by A Bug's Life. I can't even remember Antz anymore...

Antz waaay better then a bugs life ...I was eight and I liked how the antz moved it was pretty funny, and I saw it first...A bugs life made me feel like a kid.. which could explain why I hated it.

A Bugs Life all the way.

Antz was just too... boring. Uninspired. Over the heads of kids. sucky animation, even compared to A Bug's Life. Just didn't catch for me.

Umm you're complaining because it's witty, scary and over the heads of kids? ANTZ is Brilliantly written and far more complex than the formulaic Bugs Life, which incidentally still bores the hell out of me.

A Bug's Life is a very cliche Disney movie, in my opinion. Antz was a great satire, and I found it much funnier.

But they're aimed at totally different audiences. Antz is very much geared towards adults, as young kids will probably not get most of the jokes.

Antz is so much better than A Bug's Life. The original idea of bugs was from Antz I think, and the thing about "race" issues was so much more well presented in Antz. A Bug's Life is too simple, too easy, too flower-y, too "here kid, I'll chew your meal for you before you eat it". Even as a kid, it's frustrated me. The characters are more funny in Antz too.

It's so much deeper than Disney's one... And the songs and music are better.
