Was the curbstomp wrong?

First off, I loved the movie. One of my favorites of all time.

I had this discussion with a friend of mine and we thought that even though the curbstomp was brutal as hell, the man did try to steal Derek's car. If some one tried to steal my car or rob my house, I would have gotten very violent if I got the upper hand.

I am part Black if anyone was wondering, just in case it might seem a little sympathetic to the Nazis.

Was it wrong? You tell me.

It depends on various factors:
- He clearly did it out of racial hatred, so clear hate crime.
- He maybe also did it because they were gang members and felt he HAD to make an example of this guy since his buddies now KNOW where he lives.

Since he's a neo Nazi, it'll be labelled a hate crime and he's done.

If he were a regular citizen, he would get away with it.

But since not only is he a member of a hate group, but a gang member himself (heck, even leader):
- He can't really play the victim card. He's got a gang to back him up.
- He's also a CRIMINAL, so he's no more a regular citizen

You know how the cops think regarding gang on gang violence: the more casualties the better.

He's supposed to beat that a** if someone's stealing his stuff. He was wrong because he stomped his head in the concrete and killed him. That's a harsh sentence for someone caught trying to steal a car.

They're gangbangers, I say kill em all.

It wasn't just the curb stomp that was wrong. Shooting the guy on the door step was wrong, too. The guy was standing outside and Derek was inside behind a locked door. No attempt had been made to breach the door. Therefore, Derek was not in imminent danger and could and should have called the police (while guarding the door and ready to shoot if the need arose.)

yes it was because the guy who tried to steal his vehicle didn't deserve to go through that kind of abuse, i much rather would have seen him get arrested and hauled off to jail instead, I may not like car thieves but I would rather let the police take care of the situation, I won't hesitate to pull my gun on someone trying to break in my property but I would never assault them unless if I have to

I can understand where hatred could lead to violence and certainly I think many people would thinking about curbing someone who is trying to steal your truck and threaten your life.

However, actually doing it and showing no remorse (he didn't until much, much later)...I think that qualifies as sadistic and psychopathic. That seems like crossing a line even bad people rarely verge on. I think realistically, a person as righteous (at his core) as Derek would not be capable of doing such a thing. Even if he did, I think he would have been traumatized by it soon after.
