Was Jim Carrey snubbed?

Do you think Jim Carrey deserves at least an oscar nomination por his performance in this movie?

reply

Of course. With time, so many films from 1998 were forgotten, while this one is still remembered. This already says something.

If we look back, it was a tough year at the Academy Awards. I would agree that Tom Hanks (Saving Private Ryan), Ian McKellen (Gods and Monsters) and Edward Norton (American History X) were nominated with a reason. I haven't seen Nick Nolte's performance in Affliction, so I cannot judge on that. Personally, I think Jim Carrey should have been nominated instead of Roberto Benigni (Life is Beautiful is a good film, though a little bit too naive and optimistic for its dark theme). Carrey gave an amazing performance, and I have never looked at him with the same eyes again after it.

reply

Nolte is terrific in Affliction. I also would have replaced Begnini with Carrey. He definitely wasn't the best of them, but he was certainly snubbed of a nom.

reply

I agree. It was a good year, but Nolte Afliction, the best. Also Carrey.

reply

No.

I love this movie, but Jim's performance in this was nothing special to be honest.

Who else could've pulled this off? With the tone, satire etc? This role was MADE for Jim Carrey.

reply

Maybe. But that alone doesn't make it Oscar-worthy.

reply

I was referring to the comment above mine that says his performance was nothing special... I strongly disagree. He had every moment nailed down. Every angle the film took, he rode right with it and gave the perfect performance for THIS film. I'm not saying he should've won an Oscar but it was absolutely worthy of one.

reply

<Spoiler> I don't keep track of the awards the hollywoodites give themselves, but I think Jim Carrey's performance leaves little to be desired. The end scene when he finds the wall still makes me teary.

reply

This and Man on the Moon should of got Carrey a nom. It's been bugging me my entire life

The Academy is very snobby towards what that perceive as "comedy actors"! They think, for some reason, they are not to be taken seriously. If Jim Carrey was a classically trained actor and never did stand up he would have been nominated and maybe even won an award at this point. Its strange because being a successful comedy actor has to much harder!

reply

But does Jim Carrey really care about those dumb Academy Awards?

He's made as as a movie star and a great funny one at that and has made SH!T load of money.
If I was was him I'd be perfectly happy with life at that.

Every one knows that only (well mostly) the 'Arty Farty' movies get the nominations and wins.
I don't even bother watch the rubbish anymore. Stopped after Billy Chystal stopped hosting.

reply

Personally I think he more deserved an Oscar nomination for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotlless Mind (although he gave a great performance in this.

Jim Carrey is one of those few actors who are mostly known for playing silly comedic roles but can also do dramatic roles very well.

reply

Without a doubt one of the most overlooked actors of all time. He has a ton of emotion underneath all that humor. Eternal Sunshine was spectacular. Hate to see these guys get pigeonholed. Obviously he's very successful and loved by so many and that's something that will always trump any BS award... I think even he's accepted his fate. He eats up these roles when he can (Earned like $12mil for it too) but why turn down $20mil and Gross? He'll land his occasional "Quality Film" and I'll watch them all.

reply

He was definitely snubbed. Ed Harris was great in the film, but if he's gonna get one and not Jim Carrey, then that's an issue.

reply

I thought Carrey was good, not great. He was fine when trying to sort out everything going on in his life, but he had too many kooky Ace Ventura moments.
