why does everybody thinks that it´s better than te first?

I just don´t understand!!! Would anyone be so kind to explain me?
I grew up with Toy Story 1 and I think it´s one of the most beautiful motion pictures in the history of man kind. Then I heard that a second part was coming and I thought: "wow how wonderful!! yipee yay!!" and alll that stuff. But then I watched it, and I admit that I felt extremely disappointed with this film. I think it was sassy, I think it was extremely exagerated and too over-worked. I don´t know if the Spanish traduction (I´m mexican) gave me that impression, but I´m not satisffied with anything about this movie.

Why? let's see, TS2 animation is MUCH better to start with. In TS1 the "human" characters looks more like toys than the toys themselves!
Besides the story is more entertaining.
TS1 is a seminal, groundbreaking movie: the first feature film released to use only CGI, and so on. But the animation already begins to look outdated, plus the story is not really that engaging.
TS2, without being the best movie that Pixar have produced thus far, bested TS1 in every department.
Just my 2 cents.

only four words are needed to explain why part 2 is better than part 1: When She Loved Me.

Nothing tops that scene. That scene moves me every single time. It's very powerful and it made the movie what it is. I'm not saying the first film isn't good. It's bloody brilliant. But TS2 is just a tiny bit better.

I have to agree, Jesse's story makes Toy Story 2 a step above. You'd be hard-pressed to find another animated film that can hit you emotionally like that scene did. It makes me cry every time.

The first will always be great, but the second felt like it took everything that was good about the first, and did it better.

I like how the two main characters, Buzz and Woody, their back-stories are explained more in depth. In the first, Woody was really nothing more than a generic cowboy toy, and Buzz was slightly more explained, but not by much. In the second, right at the beginning, they passively explain who Buzz Lightyear is with the video game sequence. And Woody's origins are almost entirely shown. They even go as far as to show Jessie's back-story. It gives a reason to why the characters are, who they are.

And of course, the animation is naturally better. I mean, I watched Toy Story, and then the second back to back. The human characters look and move far more naturally. And the world actually feels organic. It almost made some scenes in the first look, really bad and hokey to be honest. The part when Andy's mom tucks him in bed is almost horrid because of how stiff they move. They were impressive 15 years ago, but they haven't really aged well. Toy Story 2 isn't flawless, but you really could see how they they vastly improved their animation techniques. I'm sure Toy Story 3 will refine even on these, 10 years later.

Just my 2 cents.

My friend once said TS 2 was better than 1. I kicked him in the nuts.

Barry Lyndon shot first.

I've just seen the first, and then the 2nd back to back yesterday. Both were fantastic films and TS2 is at least the first film's equal IMO, if not better.
I felt for the characters even more in the 2nd.
The CGI does look dated in places (especially in the first film) but thats more to do with technology progressing so fast I guess. TS1 in particular is an amazing achievement and a groundbreaking film.

In my opinion I liked the second a little bit more than the first because the plot line had depth and it was a bit more unpredictable than the first. Don't get me wrong, the first movie is nothing short of classic, but I can honestly say the second one was definitely on the same level as the first.

I actually liked this one just as much as the first. I liked how they showed where Woody came from and how tragic it can be for your owner to give you away.

Agreed.

I'm really interested to see where they go with that with Toy Story 3. Should be good.

I definitely like the first one the best. I'm not saying that the second one isn't good or anything, because it is and I also really like it, but you can't beat the first one

'What? I cook!'
'Offering people gum, is not cooking.'

I gotta say the second one really is better than the first. It took a much simpler film concept (the original) and made it into something deeper and more complex, that's very rare with any sequel, quite masterful.

Well I loved it a lot more then the first one. The animation looks better, the adventure just feels bigger and more complex, the characters are more colorful and the jokes are funnier. But that's just my opinion.

reply

I love the second one more because of the humour; because it was made a few years later I think they took into account that the original audience would have grown up a bit, as has happened with Toy Story 3 (they've kept in some jokes you would only get from the first films, like "THE CLAW" etc.), so the humour becomes more adult - with the references to Star Wars etc.
But the story is still classic, the characters seem to have become more bitter (which is what I find funnier - "Put me down you moron!") but it's still childish enough that you don't feel you're having to work at it
I love all the films but the second is just unbeatable, I love it
Also, I think the story is more complex than the first. Toy Story seemed to be setting up characters, but the second one could explore and had new places and characters. I also like that the toys have all grown up, like Rex and his game. They almost act like teenagers, in the first they were children - if that makes sense to anyone else?

I agree with OP.

I've always wondered the same question as i've always prefered the 1st one over the 2nd.

It was just more magical in my eyes.
