What did you rate ''Princess Mononoke'' (1997)?

It's a little hard to explain it, but there's a sort of lack of emotion, or at least emotional diversity to them. Ashitaka retains his steely determination almost all the way through, and hardly shows any sort of passion about anything. San is mostly spiteful and bitter. Eboshi is mostly plotting and conniving.

Actually my problem with the characters is best illustrated when Eboshi's arm gets ripped off: she hardly reacts to it at all, besides a quick throwaway line. You'd think that a normal person, especially in that day and age, would scream and writhe in pain. I get the same feeling throughout the movie: there's hardly a moment where a character panics, feels desperate, breaks down or doesn't know what to do, except at the very end.
