What did you rate ''Princess Mononoke'' (1997)?

imdb.com/title/tt0119698/ratings

We begin with one of the most bizarre and memorable creatures put on film, proceed to meet our noble hero, the villainess with a good heart and the heroine who hates her fellow man, along with a menagerie of strange and wonderful creatures, all fighting for control of the forest, which man is threatening to destroy. It's a marvelous movie: full of adventure, action, romance, charm and wonder.

I rated this movie 10/10. What did you rate it? What did you think of it?

10/10
One of the best animated films I've ever seen. It's far more mature and sophisticated than most live action films, whereas at the same time it's an absolute delight to watch.

Have you seen any of Miyazaki's other films? If so, what did you rate them?

reply

I've seen most of his films, but I haven't rated most of them because it's been so long since I've seen them. Though I did recently rewatch Princess Mononoke as well as Howl's Moving Castle, which I rated a 9.

She's obviously a vampire. A gross, English, titty vampire.

Have you rated any of Miyazaki's other work?

reply

Yeah, I have only seen this, Spirited Away, and Kiki's Delivery Service. I gave Spirited Away a 9/10, although I think it is more of a 9.5, and I gave Kiki's Delivery Service a 8/10.

I rated it a 10. It's my favorite animated movie, and in my top 5 of all time. Truly magnificent film.

As for Miyazaki's other works, here's some ratings I've given (I've seen more than this, but these are all the ones I've actually rated):

Howl's Moving Castle: 8/10
Spirited Away: 9/10
Castle in the Sky: 9/10
Nausicaa: 8/10

I know I've also seen Kiki's Delivery Service, but don't remember it well enough to rate it; same thing goes for My Neighbor Totoro. I have not yet seen Porco Rosso or Ponyo.

By Zeus, what kind of jackassery is this?

I gave Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away 10/10. Usually I'm not so promiscuous with ratings of 10, but I was just so taken with all three of these films. I watched them in that order, too, just this month. (This is my first exposure to Miyazaki.) They just kept getting better each time. If I had watched them in reverse order, I might have given Castle and Mononoke 9/10, but I don't know.

I'm so glad I finally started watching his films.

They really are stupdendous. The only reason I don't give Sprited Away a 10/10 is because I'm really stingy with my 10's, more so than perhaps I need to be. All of his films (that I've seen) are great. I'd suggest watching Howl's Moving Castle next, it's not quite as good as the rest, but it's still better than about 95% of what's out there.

Have you seen films of other directors from Studio Ghibli? Are they readily available?

reply

The only other one I've seen is Grave of the Fireflies (dir. by Isao Takahata). I highly recommend it. It's pretty readily availabe - if you want to rent it first, Netflix has it (that's how I saw it), and it's also available on amazon.com. Either way it shouldn't be hard to find. Other than that, I'm afraid I'm still just a novice when it comes to anime - but like you I'm trying to see more.

I gave this a 10. Probably the best animated feature of all time. And I'm extremely picky with my 10's.

"THERE WAS A FIREFIGHT!"

reply

I gave it a 10. One of a handful of 10s I've given out, and one of three animated films I've given it to.

reply

It's interesting you say that because those three happen to be my top 3 favourites from Miyazaki.

reply

8/10. I enjoyed it, but not as much as Miyazaki's "Spirited Away". It actually surprised me a little that "Princess Mononoke" is rated so highly, but a Tech-noir masterpiece like "Akira" is not even in the top 250.

reply

It's all a matter of opinion, but I find Akira to be overrated. It's good, but there was way too much plot to cram into a two hour movie, and some of it was just silly.

9. Excellent, but not perfect in the way I thought Spirited Away was. :)

It's hard to justify giving this movie anything less than a 10.

I gave it 10/10

10, one of my top 5 movies as well. I still remember the first time I saw it. It was just one of those movies that just blew me away, with the music, images and themes. I can't believe that some people I know are not interested in watching it..
