the film shouldve explained why helen's dad gave no fcks about her.

1. where was he during his daughter's parade and when she won the pageant??

2.where was he during helen's second pageant?? the one where she gives the crown to the new queen. this may not seem like a big deal to most but she mightve needed fatherly support after having to relinquish her title.

3. why didnt he come get his daughter after her public "meltdown"?? maybe helen told people not to notify him??

4. was he at home when helen screams at her mirror??

5. where the hell was helen's mother??

i wouldnt be surprised if he didnt attend her funeral because the mets were playing that day!

haha, most likely.

Helen's Mom was actually in the script, but they cut her out lol, goes something like this;

She comes running in when Helen screams after her hair has been cut

MOM
Dear God. What happened?

HELEN
I, I cut it.

MOM
Elsa, go and get an anti-depressant.

Patti D'arbanville was cast, but it said she was uncredited. I don't recall seeing her anywhere in the movie.

I don't know if her father didn't care about her, per se. I mean when I lived with my dad as an adult, I didn't go greet him or anything when I came home from work or vice versa and he didn't do the same for me, either. We just shared a house. Maybe Helen's dad just really liked baseball.

In teenage slasher films parents are either completely lame or completely non-existent. Helen's father is the former.šŸ

I've always wondered about that scene and maybe I am looking into it but there might be more at play here. She comes into the living room, says hi to her father and he doesn't even look at her. Helen is somewhat timid as it is I think and let's face it Barry as a boyfriend is an absolute d*uche. Maybe she had daddy issues. Maybe that explains why Elsa is such an angry person. Maybe they have a father who ignores them and is neglectful. I always wonder why there isn't more dialogue that explains that scene but maybe we are just to figure it out ourselves.

By the way, the film was made in 1997.............that does NOT look like Baseball in 1997 by any means. I cannot make out what teams those are. Maybe it is minor league ball, who knows, but if it is the Majors it is definitely the 1980s. I thought that the firs time I saw this.

That scene makes me think of the ending scene in the 81 movie Thief when James Caan comes into the house and that lady who's watching TV looks over at him with a blank stare then back to the TV. This one he just completely ignores her which I always thought was weird. I would've liked some kind of explanation.

I was always under the impression her dad never acknowledged her when she came home as he was disappointed in the fact she didn't become a reporter or whatever she wanted to become. Not sure why, just always had a feeling.

I was just going to say that too. Every time I watch this movie, I keep thinking, "Wow, not one *beep* is given by Helen's dad, isn't there?" Doesn't even seem to have the decency to pick up his own daughter after she has a public meltdown on stage when seeing her own boyfriend killed. He doesn't even say "Hi" to her when she returns home one night. Boy, the football game really must be worth dying for to him.

reply

They made him bland and forgetful becuase it would have been too tragic for a loving dad to lose his two daughters.

Gotta be honest, 9 Years ago which is when this question was posted, if it weren't for a site like "Movie Chat" I never would've thought to ask a Question like this about a movie like this??
