OMG! Best Sci-Fi has been filmed 17 years ago!

it's definitely one of the best Sci-Fi movies I have ever seen and it gets more interesting when you realize that it's 17 years old!!!
I rated 9 out of ten and i think it's a little bit under-rated!
please everybody rate it high, so let others want to watch this.

It's a great movie. I can't understand how almost none of my friends have seen it.

reply

yes, i think it's because this is not popular among people!
everyone must see this! ;)

reply

It gets studied in high school in subjects like English, Media, and Religious Education, so it's still reaching a solid audience :) It is such a great film- made around the time as the first animal- Dolly the sheep- was cloned and questions the implications of genetic engineering- which just gets more topical as time passes. It's a beautiful film for sure!

thanks for extra information ;)

An almost flawless film.

Just my opinion, but I believe the title is the problem. It's neither memorable, nor terribly strong. For this reason I believe it's overlooked.

This film absolutely holds up. It's pretty neat.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

I'm glad that I don't have to go out on a limb here, saying that Gattaca is my favorite sci-fi film, after the Stalker of course.

reply

Stalker, as in the Russian film based on Roadside Picnic?

reply

Gattaca is one of my favorite films of all time, and I suggest it to anyone within my social circle.

It's been years since I saw it for the first time - I was struck by what great REAL science-fiction it was at the time. In the years since, I've come to realize that it is perhaps the finest SF film ever made. GATTACA fulfills the promise of what speculative fiction has to offer in an adult, intelligent, well-crafted and entertaining way.

I gave it a "10" because I simply can't think of a better Science-Fiction film, including some of my favorites like Blade Runner, Alien, the Matrix, Children of Men, and even Cloud Atlas (which I count as the best SF film since GATTACA).

Just saw this for the first time ever. Totally blown away by it. What a fantastic experience !

it's my 3rd favorite movie of all time .

I'd likely not give it a 9 or 10, but I think it's a very solid SF flic. In fact, my gal and I watched for the second time just an hour ago. The first time we caught it was when it came out on glorious VHS, and had just hooked-up the stereo system to work with the telly; curled up together on our futon, lights off, and in the haze of our brand new 19" tv. :<>

Brought a lot of memories back for us. Not that we're rich by any stretch now, but every week was a struggle back in those days, and the one night a week we rented a vid was a treat. Also it's kind of a weird experience in itself watching the Blu-Ray so many years later with a much better system: flat screen, surround, yada yada.

Damn fine flic. Will defo watch it again. Hopefully without so many years in between next time. :>

I agree, and I gave it the same rating!

Brilliant film ! Enjoyable for adults and still kept me on the edge of my seat without the usual lame explosions and gunfire every five minutes .

reply

So underrated!

I rated it 10 so can't get no higher! I'm teaching a class at a university and I had a guest lecturer yesterday who made me realize I need to show a piece of this movie in class tomorrow because much of what it predicted is coming true and much of the class is on knowing trends.

wow interesting :)) i wonder what was the issue that made you decide so ! :)
really great movie

I teach a class in business management and we were talking about the growth of computing processing power in recent years. A retired IT manager talked about the Human Genome project which my ex-wife was sort of involved with back in 1991 when they were doing a similar project with plants and he said how now they can sequence an person's entire genome in about 20 minutes - I remember back when they took years to do it. So in Gattaca they do it in seconds, it's only a year or so away that we can do what Gattaca said could be done 17 years ago.

Agreed!! There aren't too many if any moments in this film that aren't per se boring. Exciting well made film. I liked the relationship between Vincent and Eugene. The only portion I didn't get was Vincent's need to die. I suppose he only mattered when he was able to help Eugene. He must gave felt with Eugene gone he would be lost. Kinda leaves me empty when I see that ending.

I think you got the names mixed up. Vincent went up into space, while Eugene stayed "at home" in his wheelchair (and committed suicide by burning himself in the incinerator). But yeah, Eugene's sacrifice does kinda leave me feeling empty too.

Partly what makes this film a good one - even though the whole thing plays out as predicted, tying up one part of the plot quite nicely... they invest enough time in each character, the loss is hard to bear. Jerome/Eugene is not the "guy in the wheelchair"; he deserves second billing, definitely a more important role than that of Uma Thurma.

[Warning: SPOILERS]

Agreed. It's Eugene and Vincent (not Irene and Vincent) who by the end of the movie achieve their goals in life. And they did it together. Despite the fact that I found Eugene's suicide sad and tragic, I love how in the end the camera focuses on his silver medal that becomes "gold" due to the reflection of the flames, and how the imagery of two characters swimming on the medal turned from swimming against eachother to swimming with eachother.
